Medical Billing Courses

Wallace Said:

Whats an easier way to learn these medical terms for my Medical Billing course?

We Answered:

I am currently attending college to be a Certified Medical Assistant. In my first semester I had to take Medical Terms. I asked my instructors the same thing. Is there an method to learning this terms? They replied that this is the only course that requires actual memorization. A lot of help that was. Anyway, I used flash cards. Also, as time goes on you will apply these terms and they will begin to make sense. For example, just about everyone knows what a tonsillectomy is, right? The suffix 'ectomy' means excision or to remove. And we all know what the tonsils are. We know this because we ourselves or someone we know has experienced tonsillitis; 'itis' means inflammation 'tonsils' well, tonsils. Anyway, it will come to you. There is no way you will remember them all. Good Luck!
P.S. In medical billing knowing the medical terms and their definition is the least of your worries. Getting the ICD-9, CPT codes correct is the most important. If the codes are wrong you don't get paid. (I have four years in medical billing)

medical billing?

We Answered:

I have been in the medical field for more than 15 yrs. started out as a medical assistant with some billing, now I just do billing. I like it, but you do need to make sure to stay updated and attend seminars because codes and regulations are always changing. Every year they revise the codes. Right now we're using the ICD-9, which has been in use for years, and in the next year or so, they plan to implent the ICD-10, which is a completely different way of coding. The latest thing right now, is that a lot of the companies want to hire somebody that is nationally certified as a coder for the diagnoses, and they do pay more if you are. You school certificate won't count. Another thing is you have to really know your medical terminology and have a good understanding of it. This will get better with experience. As far as them actually placing you, good luck. I don't mean to sound sarcastic, but it will be hard, and they may end up placing you at a job where billing won't be your only duty.

What are the best medical billing courses to take?

We Answered:

Any as long as they have some sort of job placement program that can help you get your foot in the door. Maybe try to choose one that has been around for some time, not a brand new institute. Medical billing is one of those things that you truly learn on the job through experience.
