Medical Career Options

Amy Said:

Wat are alternative career options for Medical Transcriptionists?

We Answered:

Have you thought about medical coding? Do you want to stay in the medical field? Depending on your age you may want to go back to school. There are high needs for nurses & pharmacists. Good Luck!!

career options for someone with a medical degree?

We Answered:

Well yeah, there are lots of options. But, before she can do a Doctors without Borders, Locum Tenens, http://www.locumtenens.com/ or anything similar, she'll need to do a residency. (or at least her Intern year... because that's when you're really a doctor, with the license and everything) As she wants a job outside the box, a 3 year residency program like Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Pediatrics, Psychiatry or Emergency Medicine will be better options for her than longer (4 and 5 year programs) ones like Surgery, etc...

Heidi Said:

I'm a pre-nursing major looking for other good career options in the medical field. Any sugguestions?

We Answered:

Don't give up yet!

You could always apply to several nursing programs at other universities. You don't have to transfer to apply.

If nursing is your dream, don't count out an associates degree in nursing. You could get your degree at a community college, start working as an RN, and THEN go back and take night school classes to get your Bachelors. I know TONS of nurses that have done this. It is smart and you will get great clinical training!

If you really are not sure, check into becoming an ultrasound tech. It is a 2 year program usually at a community college and the money is great.

Alex Said:

Is a career as an anesthiaologist one of the harder options for a medical career?

We Answered:

Anesthesiology is an easier field to get into medicine. The harder fields to match in residency are Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, Radiology, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Urology, Otolaryngology, and General Surgery.

The pathway to becoming a physician is as follows:

Undergraduate School -> Medical School (4 years) -> Residency (3-7 years) -> Fellowship (optional, time varies from months to a few years)

Don't do it for the money because you'll drop out after the first round of exams. The MCAT is nothing compared to the work you will be doing.
