Medical Coding Billing

Tyler Said:

How do I choose between medical transcription, medical coding, medical billing?

We Answered:

I am taking online courses for actually 3 different classes right now. I am doing Medical transcription, medical claims and billing, medical and dental assistant. So I know what you are talking about. lol but I am choosing to take all 3 different courses so I can be qualified in alot of things so that way I can get a job easy. The nursing field is in good demand even thought the economy is bad cause everyone always needs hospitals and nursing homes, dr appointments. So any 3 would be a good choice. If you want to work from home I would pick the medical transcription. If you want to work in the office I'd pick medical billing. Good luck to you!

How easy is it to get a job in the medical coding, billing and transcription field?

We Answered:

Medical transcription and medical coding and billing are usually 2 separate jobs. A medical transcriptionist received doctor dictation (audio files), listens to them and then types them for the patient's medical record. The medical coder and biller then takes the medical record and applies industry codes to the events that happened and supplies used. Those codes are then used to bill insurances, medicare, medicaid and the patient. The job is usually split into 2- medical transcription and then medical coding and billing.

You will be more likely to work from home as a medical transcriptionist rather than a medical coder and biller. Most medical transcriptionists work from home. To work from home as a medical coder and biller, you will usually need to work on site for a few years (1-3) before they will allow you to work from home. And that is if they even let anyone work from home. If you go to work at a hospital, you will most likely not be able to work from home as a medical coder and biller. Medical coders and billers do generally get paid more than medical transcriptionists. So that is another thing to consider.

According to the US Dept of Labor, medical coders are projected to grow 20% from 2008-2018. Medical transcriptionists are projected to grow 11%.
