Medical Examiner Career

Karl Said:

how much does a medical examiner make?and how long is the career?

We Answered:

A ME takes quite a long time to obtain. After medical school, you need to do a anatomic pathology residency then a fellowship in criminal pathology as well as take further courses in law, criminalistics, etc. So somewhere in the range of 12 years after a bachelors and possibly more.

They are a state/county employee, so their salary depends on the government civil service paygrade. For all their schooling, it is not great. There are levels of MEs as well--assistant to senior.

Carla Said:

Is anyone out there a Medical Examiner or pursuing that career?

We Answered:

I know a 30 year old woman who is a Medical Examiner. She went to a regular 4-year college and then got a Masters in the topic. At Barnes and Noble they have books that tell what schools are best at what majors (and degrees). They also have books telling you what the other names for what you are interested in is called so you'll know it when you see it. You don't have to buy the books, just scan a few pages. You can call or talk to teachers at the Junior College to see what they recommend. Just keep asking and gathering information.

Michelle Said:

Are there classes in High School a student can take to prepare for a Medical Examiners career after graduation?

We Answered:

First contact a morgue or police station.
Ask if she can visit and look at dead people and work with their bodies for a semester after school a couple of days a week.
If she actually is still interested, then ask the people with whom she is interning. They would know.
It is very trendy with CSI on TV. But in reality, usually far to gruesome for most.
It's nothing like what you see on TV.
A bit of reality is usually a good equalizer.

Sean Said:

What is a better career-job performance and career future-Forensic= pathologist/medical examiner/psychiatrist?

We Answered:

Projected job growth varies among occupational specialties. Forensic technicians will grow much faster than average. Chemical technicians will grow more slowly than average.

Job opportunities are expected to be very good in applied science technology programs.

Of course, to become a pathologist or a psychiatrist you are looking at a specialization that follows becoming a medical doctor.

The technician positions follow a two year college program of study. There is a big difference in the educational requirements of a technician versus a medical doctor.

Pedro Said:

Is a medical examiner a good career choice?

We Answered:

Nowadays many seem to be interested in this field...the medical examiner determines the cause of death and is a physician....in many areas he/she is also a forensic scientist and investigates crimes ....fascinating field if you are not one to be queasy.
