Medical Genetics Career

Misty Said:

Career options for a student with a bachelor of science degree in biology?

We Answered:

You have many career options, genetic counseling is good if you also like people and counseling, you may also need additional training/school. Get a job in a lab either academic or biotech (you will make more money in industry), try different areas to see if Genetics is your favorite.

I gave up a PhD and an MD for a master's degree in molecular and cell biology, and I am totally happy with my family life and working in the biotech industry. Dont go to medical school, my father did and I lost many years of time with him, if that is really a concern of yours. There are many other interesting things you can do, I think you're on the right track.

Pursuing a career in Medical Laboratory Testing...?

We Answered:

The line of work you are describing is that of a medical technologist/clinical laboratory scientist. These careers can be very rewarding and are in high demand due to an ever growing shortage of laboratorians. Salaries can vary from 40-55K/year starting out depending on the location and setting. If you are interested, I would recommend taking as many biology related courses while you are in high school as possible. Most major colleges and universities offer a degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science (same thing) that prepare students for 9-12 month clinical internships. Biology, chemistry or biochemistry degrees can also qualify you for the internships but you would be spending an extra year in school (in total). I'm glad your interested in this field, we can use all we can get. A good majority of medical technologists are over the age of 50 and getting ready to retire leaving the rest of us to try and fill these vacancies.

Is radiography a nice job to have?

We Answered:

That's a really individual decision. What's right for one may not be right for another. I don't know anything about genetics, but a radiation therapist makes a lot more than a radiologic technologist (radiographer), and it's less physically demanding. It would be more emotionally draining however, dealing with cancer patients.

Debbie Said:

What career should I have?!?

We Answered:

Forget about the salary, choose something you love to do.
If you love what you do it will come through in your work, which may get you more opportunities or further experience , not to mention a positive reputation. Which in turn will hopefully translate into a lengthy career and financial rewards.

Good luck!
