~~A good coder needs to know a lot on medical procedures. It isn't as complicated as it use to be because of insurance requiring preauthorization on the procedures/surgeries and that is all they will pay, unless a coder or provider can plead a case as to why something was needed and there was no time for preauthorization.

This is where a coder can make a huge difference. They need to know and understand what can be extracted from the medical records and then try to get the provider or facility payment for those services. So it is something one can learn, but it is very involved and medical knowledge is a must.~~

The field is unfortunately not as thriving as those private $$ career schools proclaim (including medical assistant :) I've heard that a medical coder needs to have a few years experience doing coding tasks and certification(s) in coding in order to possibly obtain such a job.
