Are medical assistance jobs in demand in Illinois?

We Answered:

You should understand that Medical Assisting is not a licensed profession that is regulated by a state agency. The schools that run these programs are often for-profit institutions. They offer you certification, but this is different from licensure, and therefore licensed professions will always be relied upon in health care more than non-licensed.

In many states, there are schools flooding the market and cranking out hundreds of students every year. There are only so many jobs out there. There is no shortage of MAs, but there is definitely a job shortage in many areas.

If you can make the investment, you are better off becoming an LPN which is very similar to medical assisting in many ways, although it is more acute and long-term patient-care focused rather than medical office, out patient focused. You can become an LPN in about a year, probably find a cheaper, non-profit, state school. Later, you could go for your RN and complete it in about another year, and your employer might even offer you tuition reimbursement for it.

Medical Assisting is a good job for many people, but it's sort of a dead-end in many ways. There is no higher position to advance into, such as when you're an LPN there is the RN.

Good luck in your search for information on this and your decision to pursue a career in health care!

Marion Said:

What you say is the top 5 in demand medical jobs?

We Answered:

1. RN's
2. Physical Therapists
3. Dental Hygienists
4. Respiratory Therapists
5. Pharmacists

Check the lists that come out on MSN and Yahoo listing in demand careers, hot careers etc. In the last on on Yahoo Dental Hygiene was listed as #12 on the list of 20 Top Careers for 2008 (it has more than just health/medical jobs). It is all a matter of supply and demand- check with your local community college to see where the longest wait time is for a career program and that is usually where you find the in demand jobs.

Where I live there is a 2+ year waiting list to get into the RN program at 4 out the 5 local schools in a 50 mile radius. Respiratory Therapists can look to wait 1+ before gaining acceptance to their chosen program. Dental Hygienists- must rank in the top 95th % of total applicants to get accepted- they only accept 32 per year.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck.

Daniel Said:

what are good paying jobs in demand if you dont want to be in college forever?

We Answered:

Colleges usually don't teach things you learn in high school. They do actually teach new material, regardless of what you decide to major in. However, as far as jobs, typically, majors involving math (e.g. engineering, math, science) make the most. That's a pretty general statement though, and I'm sure there are also exceptions in both directions.

Medical coding jobs in demand?

We Answered:

I used to live in Miami-Dade county! Okay here's the thing- there ARE many jobs in that area for doctor's office medical coding/billing jobs. That is doing OUTPATIENT coding. One can go through vocational training either online (www.mtacc.net) or through a course like Miami-dade CC has and work in a doctor's office. Without an AHIMA credential the pay is about $12 an hour. With an AHIMA credential the pay would be a lot higher and w/ experience even higher.

Now, hospital jobs are HARDER to get because most in Dade want the CPC credential which you cannot sit for until you have experience, but how does one get hospital coding experience when they won't hire w/o the credential??? This is why your bf is working in admitting w/ a bunch of people who've trained in coding. They are hoping to somehow work their way into the coding department. Having said all this, hospital coding jobs are SWEET in regard to benefits, pay, etc.

I hope this info helps. It comes from my head working in this business.
