Medical Laboratory Jobs

Leah Said:

which is better clinical laboratory scientist/medical technologist or a biology/biochemstry degree?

We Answered:

A degree in medical technology/clinical laboratory science would prepare you for a great, in demand, very specific career. A biochemistry degree may qualify you to work in a variety of settings but isn't steamlined to prepare you for any specific career (research, public health, industry, pharmaceuticals, etc). The medical technology degree would the wiser choice if you're certain that you are interested in the medical laboratory field. Also keep in mind, medical laboratory scientists (formerly known as medical technologists) must also complete a one year NAACLS accredited internship, and then sit for and pass the MLS (ASCP) certification exam. These internships can be used as the senior year toward the BS degree or taken post-baccalaureate.

what kind of degree do u need to be a Medical Laboratory Specialist in the military read details for more inf?

We Answered:

Seems like you just need a high school diploma and a high ASVAB line score for that job. They'll train you to do the job -- that's the great thing about the army!!

Ana Said:

Can I use an 2 year associate Medical Laboratory Tech degree to work as a Medical Assistant?

We Answered:

Brown Sugar is correct. You could not function as a MA--you don't have enough of the skills required for that job. However, you could work as a phlebotomist easily. Also, check out other jobs available in the hospital--you could work as an admissions rep/register, ward clerk, receptionist (in xray etc) etc. You could take the very short CNA course & work as that. I think you should also continue to look for lab jobs--there seems to be a general shortage of these people as there are so few training programs now & I see hirings all the time--so keep an eye open there as well.

Anne Said:

Do medical Laboratory scientists find good jobs in america?

We Answered:

Lab techs are on the lower end of the pay scale and not as secure. If you have a PhD and you are an actual 'scientist' then its a good job.

Jacob Said:

Would a degree in medical laboratory technology help with forensic science?

We Answered:

Absolutely. Forensic science is largely laboratory technology. The specific kinds of tests you do are different from those in diagnostic technology but there are many aspects of laboratory technology that are common to any kind of laboratory work, so expertise in any related field will be very helpful in other laboratory settings. Also, unlike the TV presentations where one person does it all, forensic technologists don't generally go to crime scenes to collect evidence. They stay in the laboratory and analyze materials brought in by detectives or crime scene investigators. And the CSI's don't work in the laboratory.
