Medical Laboratory Technician Jobs

Jack Said:

I have a BS in Biochem what is next from becoming a Medical Technologist Laboratory Technician?

We Answered:

You had better be clear--a lab technologist and a lab tech are NOT the same thing, and you will not get far in any interview confusing the two. The lab technologist (now called a clinical lab scientist) is a 1 year training program after a bachelors. You then take a fairly extensive exam for the license. You rotate through all areas of the lab--blood bank, hematology, urinalysis, microbiology, chemistry etc. I also had virology at the hospital I trained at as well as tissue typing. Yes, you get sign on bonuses if that hospital is offering them to that field (depends). The pay is in the high 20's and up/hour.
The American Society of Clinical Pathologists certifies med techs and can help on their web; or goggle medical technologists. Most training programs are in a hospital but after you can work private lab, research lab, crime lab etc.

Violet Said:

Can I get a Job as Vet Technician with a Medical lab. Degree?

We Answered:

It depends on the clinic. Most clinics nowadays only hire RVT (registered vet techs), this requires going to an AVMA accredited tech school. Tech school is two years long and teaches skills specific to vet clinics.
There are some clinics out there that will hire people to work as techs, but because they'd have to train you, you won't make as much and those jobs are few and far between. Usually the clincs that hire those people are smaller ones and they'd probably use you as a kennel employee as well, so you'd be in charge of cleaning up after all the animals and daily cleaning and maintence around the clinic in general.

Anita Said:

About Medical Laboratory Technician?

We Answered:

You'll get similar benefits as a nurse since there's a shortage of MLTs. You won't get paid as much and won't get as large of a sign on bonus (if applicable) since there's not as much of a shortage of MLTs as there are nurses.
