Medical Librarian Career

Margie Said:

Am I choosing the right career?

We Answered:

What kind of dumb answers from the previous posts ... June Bug is trying to work through a problem here, people! Yahoo should do something about that garbage.

Ok June Bug ... Ultrasound School is a two-year program and you are halfway through it and heading into clinicals, right? AND you aren't sure you even like the field. Here's my take:

You haven't started in the field yet, June Bug. Give it a chance. Is the job going to be stressful? Yes. Any job that requires that you possess a skill and use it correctly is stressful. If you goof up the images and the doctor is asleep at the switch, which happens, someone could be in a world of hurt. If the doctor is awake, you will get your head handed to you along with the bad images and you'll do it again. Not fun, but it makes you good if you can tough it through the mistakes you will make.

Seems to me that you are a bit scared. I do not blame you. I'd be pale and shaking. However, the job is a good one ... it is admired and you'll play a key role in health care. I'd stick with it if I were you. Give it 18 months ... 12 for the clinicals and 6 for actually working on your own. See how it goes. If you are good, you will find a pride in your work that will make you want to get up each day and go contribute. If you aren't good, you'll soon know it. Then move on to something else. Many people give up on a job before they give it a chance. You've already invested money and time into your education. Let it play out, ok? But don't hang around just for the money. I call a career situation like that "golden handcuffs." You don't like the job, but like the money ... so you are a hostage. Ugh.

Funny, that you should mention wanting to be a librarian ... that is a quiet field without minute by minute contact with people. Interesting. If you decide the medical field is not for you, maybe it has something to do with how much "people time" you can tolerate. Think about it. Also think about working with people. You won't see many people really happy to be under your tender care ... most are worried ... even the happy expecting Moms are worried. You'll have to deal gently with that while doing your job at 100% of your best. You'll see scared people ... ancient people with worn out bodies that have been around the block a few times ... damaged children who have been worn out by someone you hope is in jail. It is life, June Bug. Ready for it?

see a career advisor..or therapist and get the guidance u need.

seems like you have alot of things your good at which is why ur confused..thats normal!

so you know what you want to become..but it costs too much..is there a way to work and save to go after ur dream>? and in the meantime work in a job that stimulates u..you like the librarian job but its true u cant do that forever..u wont be satisfied.

so seeing the careers coach or mentor should be able to help u.

My girlfriend wants to be a librarian or careers of the sort, but her parent's are against it.?

We Answered:

You know the answer yourself. She should do what she wants to do. She will be miserable otherwise.

She should not let her parents dictate to her. If they're paying for her education, that makes things a bit more difficult. But the military scholarship thing makes it sound like they are not. It also sounds like it was their idea :-/

You need to encourage her to stand on her own feet and do what is right for her, not what her parents want. That's about as much as you can do I think.

Of course, you could talk to her parents yourself and make them try to see reason, but from what you say it doesn't sound as if it would be much use.

i have questions about the uc applications?

We Answered:

"Supervisor" probably qualifies the position as manager.

You can put whatever you want in the occupation as long as it conveys clearly what the person does (business owner is fine).

It's up to you whether you fill out the family data/income section. The information is for statistical analysis only and is not used for application evaluation.

Clubs should be in Extracurricular Activities.

1 day/week for 1 week, however many hours you did.

What can you do with a MLIS degree?

We Answered:

You can absolutely get a job with a MLIS degree. In fact, the Free Library of Philadelphia is so desperate for librarians that you are guaranteed to get a job, and there is NO risk of getting laid off since it is a Civil Service job with the City of Philadelphia (local government). The main library in downtown Philadelphia has a medical and science reference section, but so do most of the branch libraries. The benefits are great, and it is a career that you can stay with for a long time!
