Medical Physics Career

Margaret Said:

What is a better degree leading to a better career. Engineering, Accounting or Medical Radiation Physics?

We Answered:

I have to agree with Anna P there.

If I have to speak from personal experience then, it’s all depends on what kind of lifestyle you want to live. I landed myself in accountancy because, I was aspiring to be a commercial pilot, and didn't managed to get good grades in Pure maths and however I was v good at applied maths. So, I choose the Accounting. Having said that I will say 4 of my best friends gone into diff direction and what a co-incidence two gone into Engineering (Chemical/Electronics), one on its way to be a cardio thoracic consultant (he's an Specialist registrar at the mo) and the other did physics degree and now looking after dad's business.

Both of two engineers had brief stint after degree into places sort of away from home in industrial areas, neither of them liked it and both returned to do MBA in finance (!!!) and now working in finance capacity (for them lifestyle and future prospect was big issue in their original chosen subject), the medical guy is not looking back having secured his training contract into local NHS hospital, he's earning the most but we last gone for holidays above 4 years before. But damm I’m positively jealous of his success, he has got the most respect in all of our families and community. last guy did physics degree (applied physics to be more precise) and gone to Japan to work for a company and came back after 2 years feeling homesick and now looking after his dad business.

Now talking of meee, I really wanted to be a commercial pilot but I managed to fulfil my dreams. After degree in Accountancy and Audit, I worked towards being qualified accountant and now I'm fully qualified and work for a multinational pharma company and their global presence takes me all over Europe (not that I like it most of the time but it’s as good as being a commercial pilot, I think). Yeah, I do lots of number crunching and there are times I felt if I was in an right place but I change my focus towards creativeness and Now I specialise in systems accountancy, SAP is my speciality and boy once you get hang of it they will pay you nice money, all you have to do is be in a superlative category of your chosen subject.

I'm not advocating Accountancy but it has to be your choice of long term future aspiration rather than sort term gain.

Best of luck ! And do ask me if you need any more info.

PS: You don't have to be an accountancy graduate to be a qualified accountant. My recent trainee is an engineering grad (mechanical) and she is working towards being qualified accountant.

What are the future prospects and career on Computational Physics, Applied Physics, and Medical Physics?

We Answered:

i'm an applied physics major, so i have been looking into some of these things fror myself. applied physics seems to be the most broad, so if you can't choose, it is the best, and also would keep your options open more for grad school. medical physics seems most likely to prepare you for a certain career path, though you can always switch without much trouble.

if you know you want to work, i'd say all three are equally good, but if the math part is harder for you, maybe medical? if you want to continue you're studies, probably applied.

your department adivsors can give you much better answers than me, so talk to them.

Carmen Said:

Besides in the HOSPITAL, what are the career prospects for the fresh graduate from MEDICAL PHYSICS?

We Answered:

Well, there is always continuing with your studies and going into research. Any medical facility (and I don't necessarily mean a hospital) requires some level of knowledge on this. You might wish to try your hand at applying to sports centres/organisations as well.

What are the career prospects on Medical Physics, Applied Physics, and Simulation Physics?

We Answered:

Medical physics is concerned with the applications of
physical energy, concepts, and methods to the diagnosis
and treatment of human disease. Examples of areas in
which a medical physicist may work include the
application of ionizing radiation to medical diagnosis and
therapy; bioelectrical investigations of the brain and
heart; and the medical uses of infrared radiation,
ultrasound, nuclear magnetic resonance, heat, and lasers.
Radiation therapy is the major field of employment for
medical physicists.
Job Settings are in Hospitals and other medical care facilities. A median salary for medical physicists
is about $72,500 per year.

Applied physics mostly works with applied research and development rather than in basic research.

and I didnt really find anything about simulation physics. Ask your professors or each advisors for some information. But maybe they work on the radiation machines treating cancer. Good luck. Hope this helped.

Miguel Said:

Is High-School Physics required as a path to be a doctor or medical career?

We Answered:

Physics is not needed to be a doctor per se. First you need to major in something. Then after you get your bachelor's. You can apply to a medical school for nursing, doctor, anything.
