Medical Records Jobs

Kent Said:

How is going digital medical records saving us money and providing jobs?

We Answered:

It doesn't - it does make it easier for some busy body snooping fat government lard butt employee to look at your records especially after we all get forced into single payer govt insurance (eg: what happened with Joe the Plumber).

Tara Said:

How do you file medical records?

We Answered:

This depends on the filing system at the facility you are going to. There are many types of systems; straight numeric which is a system where each patient gets a number in succession. ie, the first patient ever is assigned 1 and then each patient thereafter is in count, second patient is 2 etc. These charts are usually set up as five digits, ie. 00001, 00002.

Then there is alpha, where the chart is filed strictly in alphabetical order.

Then there is Alpha-numeric, for example we will take my name Winter Aires. My chart may be filed as Ai-267 then if there was someone names Winter Aries her chart may be filed Ar-267.

The most common system in use is called a terminal digit filing system. With this system the last couple of digits are the first numbers filed by, then the middle digits then the first digits. Lets say you have three charts they are numbered
01-23-45, 01-24-46, and 01-28-45

They would be filed:
01-23-45
01-28-45
01-24-46

As for the order in which documentation is filed in the chart, each facility has their own file format.

Good luck! I have worked in Health Information for 20 years and I love it!

What kind of jobs are in the medical records department of a hospital?

We Answered:

If you want to go to college, to get a bachelors you can get a Health Information Administration degree and sit for the RHIA and this job is being the head honcho of the Medical Records department. If you want an associates you can sit for the RHIT and become the assistant director of medical records.
If that's too long you can be a coder and biller and it shouldn't take more than a year to complete and sit for the CCA, after experience the CCS.

I started as a Coder and Biller I went to school and sit for the CCA, I started doin inpatient coding in the hospital, recieved my CCS and became supervising director of coding and billing. I have received my RHIT and now I am assistant director of medical records. Where I live there is more money involved. Check with local schools and online for options available to you.

Ellen Said:

Will the use of electronic medical records get rid of medical record jobs?

We Answered:

No, but it will change the profession dramatically. There are too many places that still use paper records to worry too much about the EHR causing any particular upheaval at this point. Electronic records are proving to have some problems that are taking healthcare insitutions a while to iron out. The big difference in the future will be that in order to deal with medical records, you'll have to have a base of knowledge in computer science, where you didn't before. Records will still need to be dealt with, it will just be on computers, servers, disks and such instead of plain old "forms" on paper.

Nina Said:

Might someone know specific jobs the medical records on line will produce and training needed to get one?

We Answered:

Please steer clear of those online, for-profit schools such as university of phoenix, ITT tech, strayer, kaplan, devry, capella, keiser and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit': http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search.

General career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'medical records and health information technicians' or such. They are usually at the associate (2 year) degree level.

Please note that if thinking about medical (insurance) biller and/or coder, that there aren't supposed to be too many jobs despite what those private schools proclaim. The billing companies are being outsourced overseas to Asia/India.
