Medical Secretary Career

Alexander Said:

I have to interview a medical secretary for my career paper?

We Answered:

Please note that a medical secretary is far from healthcare administration.
1. My interest in becoming involved in healthcare developed when I was a teenager and had regular visits to a specialty physician due to a physical disorder.
2. Classes in high school: Classes that train you in word processing, Excel, accounting, short-hand or quick writing, anatomy, psychology.
3. My education is an Associates of Arts degree in Medical SEcretarial sciences.
4. Many physicians hire new grads
5. After 20 years of experience, I am now a director of a Medical Staff Services Department at a hospital

Benefits vary from office to office. Fulltime positions generally include paid holidays, sick days, vacation and healthcare

Yes, my job now requires constant education and certifications

Jessica Said:

medical secretary vs medical assistant? what is the difference? which is a better career choice?

We Answered:

Hopefully I can answer this for you...I am a certified MA-my training included both the clinical as well as the administration side-
I got my initial training back in the early 80's through a technical college so Im not sure how much has changed ( probably a lot as far as the length of courses etc) I still have to re-certify but its not as invasive as the training was. Most of the MA jobs I have had over the years have been more along the admin side of things however when needed I do the clinical part as well. I much prefer the admin part over the clinical.
If Im not mistaken there isn't that much of a difference between an MA and a MS save that the trained MS cant do any hands on with a patient directly whereas an MA can/does. In the program I was in years ago we were trained for everything from blood draws to medical transcription.
As far as which one is a better career choice........it depends on what you prefer. My last job consisted of only admin-I did the transcription and coding and billing for the group I worked for and that was it. I had NO contact with any patients other than paperwork issues and I loved that. I also made more at that job than I did doing a combination of MA or just the clinical side. The plus side of solely being a clinical MA....comfy scrubs for work! :o)

Medical Secretary or Pet Groomer?

We Answered:

I groomed for several years, but I decided to pursue a different career (paramedic). Groomers just don't make enough, and with the economy where it is now, fewer clients were bringing their dogs in regularly any more (if at all). You are so close to your degree- I would suggest finishing it and testing the medical field. The country will always need medical staff (not quite the same for pet groomers). Best of luck to you! :)

*One more thing- If you can get the training affordably,it wouldn't hurt to try grooming out of your home part-time in the future. That way you can see if it grows, without it being your only source of income. :)

Help with career question in the medical field?

We Answered:

These are all pretty much entry level jobs, with somewhat limited demand. The phlebotomist probably makes the least & is really a stepping stone job for someone in school. It is the least flexible job.The MA makes about 10-15$/hr depending on location, but may be extremely hard to find a job. There is not much advancement in that position. They could also work as a phlebotomist as they are taught blood drawing. An medical office secretary probably makes about the same although you might be able to lateral over to allied medical fields or non medical offices and thus have the possibility to earn more. The MA is also taught to do many front office jobs as well and would compete for jobs with the secretary.

Which is the more lucrative and reliable career choice? Medical billing/coding or legal secretary?

We Answered:

Medical billing is a pipe dream. Very few people are successful. Technical colleges like to showcase the small percentage of their graduates who successfully start home businesses after they graduate, but they don't tell you that most people who graduate never find a job, never have success starting their own business, and end up working in another profession to pay back their student loans.

Legal secretary or paralegal is a viable career choice if you enjoy it.
