Medical Sociology Career

Marjorie Said:

Can a sociology major get a job in the medical field?

We Answered:

A bachelor's degree in sociology would probably be limiting in terms of jobs that pay decently even with a minor in biology. In order to work as a research technician or something along those lines, the person most likely has earned a doctorate degree (though perhaps minimum master's in bio but not sure). Some colleges though not sure that they are in abundance, have a major called 'psychobiology' which incorporates both psychology and biology, however, one may still need a professional/master's or doctorate degree to find a job in that line of work.

If you wanted to get your bachelor's in sociology and then master's in social work, you may then look for work within a health care setting such as a hospital or nursing home (as a 'medical social worker').

What courses could you suggest for someone aiming for a career as a Foreign Correspondent or Sociologist?

We Answered:

Foreign Correspondent - major in journalism

Sociologist - Degree in Sociology (and no, it is not criminology (although you do have interactions with people in that field) - a sociologist studies society and culture).

Jeffrey Said:

What career options are available for me with a major in Biology, Psychology, or Sociology?

We Answered:

If you plan to move ahead to a PhD, then you can work in any number of fields. Sales is where most people end up who stop at the BS. With a science background you can work in more scientific related sales jobs, or really, you can hold almost any office job that doesn't require a specific specialty. I know my answer is vague, but the reality is that 75% of university graduates don't work in the field that they studied in school.

Once you have completed the MS, you can work as a lecturer while completing your doctorate. This is often part of the deal while completing a PhD to help you remain solvent.

After that, you can be a professor, or there's always room for one more highly educated person at Barnes & Nobles or Starbucks that can't find a good teaching job.

Good luck!

I'm 22 yrs old, nearly complete my BA in Sociology. I don't know what I want to pursue for a career. Advice?

We Answered:

what about political Sciences or International Relations , I think that besides your BA in Sociology these studies could be good for a job in International organization ( UN, EU,....) to work in developing countries. In addition, you have to learn other languages French, Spanish, Germany, Italian,. Indonesian..
