Medical Spa Careers

Jean Said:

Of all careers & jobs out there, what jobs will provide good $ right now & be able to live comfortably later?

We Answered:

Any career that engages you so that you enjoy coming into work each day should serve your purposes. The key is for you to find something that fits you, then the money will come.

What career is better Massage Therapy or Medical Assisting?

We Answered:

Well i know at the college I go to (which is a community college) you can get your degree in Medical assisting and just take a few more classes and have a degree in massage therapy. You could always go to school, take the mandatory classes and maybe do a job shadow with someone in each field to really decide what you want. If it is something that you are more passionate about, go for it...don't do something that you think you will "grow" to love. Nothing is better than going to a job that you love and doing something that you really enjoy. Best of luck to you!

How hard is it to find a Career in Aesthetics in Columbus, Ohio?

We Answered:

I have been in the professional spa products business for over 10 years. During that time, I've seen a lot of spas open and close and a lot of estheticians move from spa to spa.

It's a hard living and not very stable. Get in with a good spa such as Mario's International in OH. Learn a lot and don't fall into the temptation to start your own spa - they have a high failure rate.

Oh, and take a business class at the local adult school.

Good luck.

What is this medical career called?

We Answered:

Laser may require a medical license of some sort (RN, PA, NP, MD); other lesser procedures may be done by an aesthetician. Look at your state gov pages for a description of who can do what.

Other than a dermatologist, what other skin care careers are there?

We Answered:

There are lots of different names for "spa industry" jobs because there are lots of different specialties. There are masseuses, beauticians, estheticians, and heaps more. To get involved in the industry it will be very helpful to do a course through a beauty school or polytechnic - these courses often go over a broad spectrum of things from the industry so you can get a taste for what you might want to specialise in. Courses usually take one year to complete. You would then need to complete an apprenticeship at a spa or beautician until they felt you were competent enough to go out there on your own. Alternatively, you could try to skip the formal training by calling around some spas and asking if they are looking for apprentices - but be careful to not be exploited by spas looking for cheap labour. You might also like to do some research online to look at types of jobs you could do and how much you might earn.

What's the difference between a skin care specialist and an esthecian?

We Answered:

There isn't a difference. A lot of the time you will see Estheticians referred to as skin care specialists (some schools will even call their programs Skin Care Specialist programs). Once you complete the program you will test for your Estheticians License. Esthetics is actually non-medical skincare, but some schools offer para-medical skin care courses which would give you more of a step in the medical field if that's what you're looking for.
