Medical Technologist Career

Erika Said:

Wondering about a medical technologist career...?

We Answered:

Medical technologists (MTs) establish, perform, control, and supervise all levels of clinical laboratory testing in hospital and small clinical laboratories. They work with blood, urine, stool, body fluids, and sputum amongst other materials, testing for bacterial and fungal pathogens, cellular markers, leukocyte and erythrocyte levels, blood chemistry levels, Human leukocyte antigens (for tissue/organ matching), and type and issue blood products to nursing staff. Testing is divided between the disciplines of hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, immunohematology (blood bank), genetics, histology, and histocompatibility. Some MTs work in multiple areas and some specialize in a single department. MTs are promoted to supervisors, managers and laboratory directors and sometimes even hospital administrators. It is a respected profession, although it is often under recognized and misunderstood. Most medical technologists are board certified through ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology), NCA (National Credentializing Agency for Laboratory Personnel), or AMT (American medical technologists) and have bachelor's and sometimes master's degrees and complete their education through 50 week clinical internships provided by hospital based medical technology schools approved by NAACLS.

I would say medical technology is a great choice if your are into medical science and enjoy technical and critical thinking and troubleshooting. As a medical technologist in microbiology (soon to be specialist), I enjoy working behind the scenes away from the "chaos" but still having a huge impact on patient care. The results delivered by the clinical laboratories as a whole are responsible for an estimated 70-80% of medical decisions. The field is just beginning to experience what is expected to become a significant shortage of medical technologists and other laboratory personnel due to a retiring majority of MTs that are over the age of 50. The national salary range for medical technologists just out of school is between 40 and 55K depending on location (higher salaries can be expected in coastal cities).

Medical Technologist- Safety, Career..?

We Answered:

I consider anything in the health care field favorable, but yes it is and its safe because you have to follow universal and standard precautions, proper hand washing and the use of PPE. Ultimately if you dont like the challenge you can always move up to something different and hold that title under your belt to fall back on at anytime.

Is working as a Medical Technologist a good career?

We Answered:

Chester Said:

what career to pick Human Resources or Medical lab technologist?

We Answered:

This is a good question for me because I am an HR Director and my wife is a Medical Lab Technologist. It really depends on what you like to do. It's easier for my wife to find jobs and her hours are better. But she handles things like poop, pee, and blood. I work in an office all day and I get paid more. The only person above me in the corporate food chain is the CEO. My wife answers to several doctors and supervisors. I manage four people. My wife manages none. Anyway if you would like to know more about these two jobs you can email me at least_likely2@yahoo.com.
