Medical Transcription As A Career

Lori Said:

What some useful tips, when starting medical transcription as a career?

We Answered:

I have been both a MT employee and MT employer. As an employer I have looked primarily for reliability. I figured that the transcription production would improve over time, but for me, the important thing was to be able to rely on the employee to do the work when it was expected to be done.

So if you have references either from former employers or from others and they can attest to your reliability, this would be a good thing.

There's tons more on this career at the website below, including real jobs.

Kay Said:

what do you think of medical transcription as a career?

We Answered:

I work at home as a transcriptionist and have done so for 9 years. I make on average $500-600 a week, which is great considering I don't have to pay for gas, daycare, etc. It is the ideal job, especially if you are a mom. Most companies pay by the line, so your paycheck can vary depending on how much work you are able to type. Despite popular opinion, it is still a great career to get in to because, even though companies are using speech recognition equipment, it is not fool-proof. My company has been using that equipment for 3 years and the program still hasn't gotten used to the doctors voices. We still have to make corrections to ALL of the reports that come through.

Daniel Said:

Do you need a Career Diploma for Medical Transcripting/Floral Design?

We Answered:

You could not do transcripting without training (you also would probably not find a job). I would imagine floral design is the same. However, there may be cheaper routes that Ashworth. YOu should investigate more fully as well as the likelihood of getting a job in you area in either of these careers.

The future of Medical transcription as a career?

We Answered:

Voice recognition software (VRS) is already being used throughout the world in many clinical environments so I wouldn't bank on medical transcription as being a career prospect. Short term, maybe.

In the hospital where I was working the management started sending tapes to India for transcription because it was cheaper than using UK medical secretaries - however the hospital is now bringing VRS in for clinicians so the need for outside transcription services has gone right down. VRS is also more reliable - no spelling mistakes or misunderstandings, therefore less time in corrections and redrafts. There were lots of letters with huge mistakes and potentially dangerous mis-typings - especially with drug names and dosages when the work came back from overseas. Hardly surprising, when people who speak a different language or aren't used to english pronunciations are transcribing medical tapes.
