Part Time Medical Jobs

Caroline Said:

What casual/part time jobs are there for 1st year Medical Students?

We Answered:

My goodness.... you have TIME to work? I remember first year as being busy busy busy. Lots of bookwork, anatomy classes, all sorts of things. In my spare time, I chose getting a little sleep. :)

BTW, do you live in Adelaide, SA? We visited your town a few years ago and loved it.

John Jones, M.D.

What is the easiest way or best thing to do to find a temporary/part-time medical job??

We Answered:

Try a temp agency...some cater specifically to the medical community. It won't hurt to sign up with one...you can always continue to look elsewhere. I wouldn't say you are looking for temporary work if you are planning to work for a year or so. Go to the larger medical centers in Dallas and talk to HR...you should be able to find something! GOOD LUCK!

any part time jobs in medical transcription?

We Answered:

Once you've gotten good training, yes, you can work part time in medical transcription. I did it for 3 years. However, if you haven't gone through some sort of training, forget it.

You can do medical transcription at home or on location, and you haven't really made it clear which you're after. But in both cases, hiring and training up is rare. There's a lot to learn. Good quality medical transcription programs can be done by the determined in maybe 6 months, but taking 18 months is not unheard of.

When I worked part time, the one requirement was that I scheduled myself for at least 20 hours per week.

a part time medical-related job for a high school student?

We Answered:

Some hospitals employ what used to be called "candy-stripers" (because their uniforms were striped red and white). They provide non-medical patient assistance such as replenishing water pitchers, tidying rooms, bringing a snack cart around the ward, etc.

If your local hospital does not employ candy-stripers, other options would be a filing clerk or receptionist in either a hospital, doctor's office, or para-medical office (like chiropractor, physiotherapist, etc.).
