Acid Reflux Over The Counter Medicine

Gene Said:

What's the best over the counter medicine for Acid Reflux?

We Answered:

I have two boys with GERD-- my middle son tried Zantac to no avail. Prevacid works wonders for him. Prevacid is a proton pump inhibitor & you can get an over the counter proton pump inhibitor by buying Prilosec OTC. I have never used Prilosec, but since it is inthe same class of drugs as Prevacid and I know people who have used it with success, I would say to give it a shot. Zantac is a H2 receptor antagonist and is available OTC...it might be of help to you. I hope you can find relief.

what is a good over the counter medicine for acid reflux?

We Answered:

Prilosec and Prevacid are Proton Pump Inhibitors, which are more expensive and possibly stronger than your acid reflux requires.

How often do you have heartburn? Have you tried modifying your diet and lifestyle (not eating too close before going to bed)? If you have heartburn only once a week or so I'd try Zantac first (ranitidine). Zantac is an H2 antagonist which will be cheaper and safer. Avoid Tagamet.

does any one know of any over the counter acid reflux medicine stronger than pepcid complete and prilose otc?

We Answered:

If you don't have symptom control with over the counter medication, then you need to be evaluated. One possibility is that you are misinterpreting your symptoms and treating the wrong thing, another is that you are on the right track, but your reflux is worse than you thought.

Reflux is a very common problem. There are a variety of ways to treat it, based on an evaluation of why it's happening.

Christine Said:

What over the counter medicine can I use for "food reflux"?

We Answered:

Most would consider this acid reflux. Try not to eat certain foods, such as citrus, tomato, chocolate, mint, garlic, onions, or spicy or fatty foods and see if that helps. And don't drink certain beverages, such as alcohol, carbonated drinks, coffee, or tea. You can definitely try the medications such as prevacid or prilosec... I would visit your general m.d. and ask if he thinks that you should try these medications. It may help even though you may not have all signs of acid reflux.

Hope this helps!
