Personally, I do not believe in such research as I do not believe humans will ever be able to attain immortality, even if we are able to increase our lifespan due to medical advancements.

If the research indeed bears results, there will be extreme implications in the way man perceives life and the whole notion of life will be changed. There will, of course, be other issues such as overpopulation to deal with. To start with, one of the defining aspects of life is death. Death is an inevitability, and this makes human treasure life even more. Life may be taken for granted if immortality exists. Also, imagine if two people get together, and one is immortal while the other is not. The one who is immortal is destined to lose the other from the start.

There is also the practical issues of overpopulation, as well as the consequential implications on the environment and pollution. It would be hard to cope with the issue, especially since Earth is only so big. If man becomes immortal, space is bound to run out. Perhaps, then, living in outerspace will be an alternative. But that is a different issue altogether.

Ultimately, I feel that it would be extremely hard (and this is a gross understatement) for man to perceive the notion of immortality as death is so much a part of life that it is hard to imagine that life will have no end. What, then, if people were to wish to die peacefully? Will they have no other option but to use artificial means such as euthanasia? I do not believe in investing in this research, and even if it is based on scientific grounds, death should be something that is universal, as is life. Rather then seek to extend our lifespans, man should instead seek methods to live a more fulfilling life, so that when we pass away, we can do so in peace without any regrets.

This is science fiction.

Scientists once thought that the secret to ageing lay in Telomeres - which dictate how many times a cell can divide. In reality, ageing is far more complicated than this. No magical anti-ageing medicines are being formulated.

The maximum human life is about 120 years. At this point, muscle wastage inevitably occurs and the major organs fail. Most people of course succumb to a disease much earlier than this.

The best way of extending your life is to avoid stress, and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.

In the laboratory? Yes. In the human body - NO. Most cells do not use up all of their Telomeres anyway. The problem is not a due to a simple lack of Telomeres. Do you not think nature would have provided for this if this was the case?
