I have pneumonia what is best cough medicine to take?We Answered:
You want something that is an (expectorant-)-makes you cough, as well as something to help calm your throat to keep you from coughing all the time.. Robitussin has several preparations that include both or 2-4 different ingredients. You would need guifenisen(expectorant like in Robitussin CF) and dextromorthorphan (helps calm the throat), some other preps. include a decongestant and or/either an anti-histimine. The later two usually helps more with running or stuffy noses. These are over the counter. You do not want to totally supress your cough, since you have pneumonia-lack of coughing can cause your lungs to rub against the sacs( pleursy) or to actually lock up. You can request a preparation from your physician that has a 5-10pct base of codeine per 5/ml of syrup with a guifenisen mix. This will help you relax and rest during your recoop. and keep you coughing. Do not abuse this, because the codeine will override the other and it will lead you to the hospital-fast.
