The best thing over the counter for cold sores is Abrevia. It usually costs 15-20 dollars for a real small ammount, but thats because it used to be by RX only. Use it right away when you feel the "tingle"
Otherwise you can make an appointment with your family doctor and ask for Valtrex cream(RX) A.K.A. Acyclovair .And for those whos jobs depend on public appearance use the oral pill. Canker sores are different, so I would not use it for this, it wont work.

Warm salt water helps a bit. I wouldn't recommend putting salt directly on it, it probably wouldn't feel very good. Also, I doubt that eating more fruits will help... The only way I can see it helping is the fruits keep your immune system strong which in turn helps it combat the canker sore.

Campho-Phenique is available at most drug stores and discount stores. It will kill germs and also deaden pain. I also use Chloroseptic mouth spray. Sometimes diet can cause canker sores. Some nuts, tomatoes and acidic fruits can cause them. Sugary foods also could be the culprit.

What I use is called Herbal Canker Care by Quantum. I got it from the health food store. With all that I've tried, I've had the best results from this so far. The sores seem to heal the fastest using this. Also try using L-lysine (in tablet form) found at either walmart or your health food store.

Orajel and Anbesol, both of which you can get without a prescription, will numb the sore and make it less painful. There are also prescription medications you can get that will help. There are several mouthwashes that can help – look for one without alcohol. Even if you don’t have any of those treatments, you can rinse your mouth with warm salted water several times a day. It is gross, but it will help.
