I'm stuck Between Two Careers: Medicine or Police? We Answered:
Getting into medicine is very hard and only 10-15% of people who apply get in. If you choose to pursue this, be prepared for rejection and being told you CANNOT do it. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try though.Medicine is a very high stress career with anti-social hours. You are exposed to diseases and people at their worst. Sure, if you hang in, the pay is good, but if you hate it that's hardly compensation. I have known doctors who have regretted their career choice. They hate late night shifts, blood splatters (who knows if the people have HIV?), smelly unkempt and rude patients...
It is not all like ER and Gray's Anatomy. I have relatives who are doctors and some of them do seriously regret their careers.
Police is a dangerous job, but I am sure it has its rewards too. It is also not very well paid, but if you rise through the ranks and become detective etc. you will live comfortably eventually. It is a more action-packed job than medicine in some ways and is more physically demanding. Again, you will meet people at their worst. Sure, you are helping people, but you have to really have a strong stomach an assertiveness in law enforcement.
It is also not easy to get into. Competition to get into different police forces can be tough as well.
Only you know what you truly want to do. Why not talk to some people in these careers and get more information?
