Cough Medicine For Toddlers

Renee Said:

How to help a toddler's cough?

We Answered:

is it a wet cough or a dry cough? If it's wet.. try eliminating the dairy in his diet for a while, dairy creates mucus.. and all of us moms know what happens with a really wet mucusy cough.. (vomit) if its a dry cough it could be that his throat is just dry.. you should up the fluids (they say to keep the nose and throat wet to prevent illness) and/or you could turn on the shower and sit with him in the bathroom, let the steam break up some of that deep down phlegm. Also try using a vaporizer at night or any time he is sleeping. (promotes keeping him from getting too dry, i know my son sleeps with his mouth open a lot and gets that really dry throat and lips) Good Luck. I am totally not against medicating. .but a lot of times medicine just keeps the cough longer than helping.. you could give sugarless hard candies to suck when its really bad.. just make sure if he continues to cough while eating it that you take it away so he doesnt choke.

toddlers cold/cough medicine follow up. i asked the pharmacists..?

We Answered:

Your not suppose to give babies under the age of two baby med because alot of people was giving too much to the little ones and it was causing problems. Give them lots of fluids that's what's suggested now. But my 7month old was super sick and she was feeling so bad so I gave her 0.8ml of the baby med infant drop every 6 hours for one day and now she feels alittle better I havent gave her anymore because I don't want to get in trouble for giving it to her in the first place but she is feeling alot better and has stop crying and is playing.

effects of cold medicine on toddlers?

I medicate like this too. It isn't overmedicating, all of these do different things.

Robitussin is an expectorant, this will drain the sinuses. Active ingredient guifennessin.

Benadryl or diphenhydramine is an anti-histimine. This is drying, and will suppress allergic reactions, hives, eczema, itching, and usually causes sedation.

Triaminic is a decongestant, though it tastes bad.

I do not use triaminic but use dimetapp also a decongestant. I do use benadryl and mucinex same ingredients as robitussin. Her mom is on top of things, really.

I don't spread it out so much, and my younger kids have never been on an antibiotic ages 2, and 3.

I will give Benadryl at night with mucinex (expectorant active ingredient guifennessin, with dimetapp all at the same time.

During the day I give mucinex with dimetapp together when draining mucus that is thick green or yellow.

When the drainage is clear, or just stopped up I alternate.

These meds can be given together and every 4 hours but thats the max.

Of course the doctors office wants to see her, that is how they make money.

I don't make it a habit to run to the doctors office for colds, diahrrea, fevers under 104F, vomiting, viruses etc.

It sounds to me like the baby's mom has a medical background or is a savvy self-educator

You would be shocked at hospital dosages of pediatric meds are. What are you give 2.5mL of Children's Benadryl? We give twice that, a whole teaspoon since 18 months, though my boys are solid and were over the 24 lb marker considered 2 yr old weight, that was doctor's order dosage, I was giving the 2.5mL

Also, I take prescription strength guifennessin, though I am an adult. It is called Dura-tuss. It is a combo med that is 1200mg guifennessin/sudafed 90mg. OTC sudafed is 30mg, and guifennessin adult strength is in robittussin 100mg guifennessin per teaspoon or 5mL, in mucinex its 600mg per tablet.

Really 2 thumbs down, sure take advice from people with no medical background/knowledge making outlandish claims that your daughter could die, from taking these meds as prescribed, none of them are closer than every 4 hours.
These same people probably vaccinate blindly without doing any research at all.

Best cough medicine for toddlers?

Doctors will tell you that cough meds don't even work and aren't safe to give to children under the age of 6. But, I have an almost 3 year old son that I give Children's Mucinex or a generic brand ( I use Dollar General's brand) and it helps bunches. Just use the chart on the back for his age or weight. If his cough is really bad, I use vapor rub as well. I also have a vapor fan that works with the vapor strips and is battery operated.

At Walmart there is Tussin Dm, its the equate brand and only costs about $3.50
The pharmacist told me I could give my son (14 months old). 3/4ths of a dose. He weighs 21 lbs. Go to your pharmacy and ask them.
