Yes, if you give the medicine and your dog has untreated heartworms you can kill the dog. Part of the worms can die or break off then float around in the blood stream waiting to clog a vessel in the brain or heart.

He could have ear mites or an infection, you should see the vet, find out what the problem is and get the correct medication.

You may be able to use Predisone in the pill form
You do not have to give it every day and it is not expensive.
It is however a steriod and you do not want to give if it you do not need to.
My vet gave a shot and some oft he pills I only had to give like one pill and they were good for about a week or more.
And we did it one year and after that I had no more problems.
They benedryl is a good answer and you can give it twice per day. We used it on one of mine for a time.
