Genetics In Medicine

James Said:

Controversial Issues having to do with Modern Medicine or Genetics...?

We Answered:

There is currently controversy over whether or not humans should be able to select genetic traits of their offspring. Couples whose offspring may be at risk of inheriting a genetic disease can go to a doctor and select embryos to implant so that they will not pass on this undesirable disease. However, someday this may lead to couples choosing what their offspring look like or how intelligent they will be, how muscular, etc. This may lead to the creation of "super humans" that have all of the best traits selected. Is it fair to create genetically superior humans?

Is a career in medicine for me?

We Answered:

Surgery sounds perfect for you!

On a side note though, in order to become a well-rounded person, you might want to work on people skills. You don't need to bond with everyone you interact with, but it is a valuable thing, especially for doctors, to learn to build rapport with patients. As a surgeon, you need to show that you are the authority figure delivering a precise service, but you also need to put them at ease, and make sure they understand who you are and what you are doing to them. Don't worry, then they're on the table, and you are elbow deep in their dura mater, you don't need to talk to them.

Medicine or Genetics?

We Answered:

You could major in biology, and specialize in genetics, get a PhD and teach it to med school students.

My aunt did that, and spends part of her time in the lab and part teaching future doctors. Just a thought.

Nina Said:

to what extent human genetics is relevant to medicine?

We Answered:

your friend is completely wrong. human genetics is (and is becoming more and more so) the basis for medicine if anything. knowing how diseases work on the most basic level is one of the ultimate goals of human genetics. medicine in the future will be based off this information.
