Herbal medicine for social anxiety?

We Answered:

You have many options for anxiety in over the counter supplements. If you are having issues with general anxiety I would say your best option is 5-HTP. You should start with 50-100mgs a day, although some take up to 200mg per day. Side effects are similar to SSRI, particularly Prozac. You can have sexual side effects and nightmares are the most common. If you have nightmares or other side effects lower the dose and that should help. This would be my first option.

Another would be, GABA. GABA is good to take at night before sleep or if your having an issue with immediate anxiety/ panic. There are some temporary side effects like, flushing and shortness of breath, but they subside within a few minutes. GABA can make you drowsy as can 5-htp. 1500-3000mgs of GABA seems to be the best dosage.

Those are the best options in my opinion, Kava is another, but it is a little trickier. Good luck

Do you know of any natural/herbal remedies for anxiety?

We Answered:

Try over-the-counter Sam-E. Be careful if you are on the pill while using it - i think it has St. Johns Wort in it which can interact with the pill making it ineffective. Also, try some yoga - worked wonders for me

Ive been researching medicine for anxiety and depression, but all the drugs have the conditions as side effect?

We Answered:

Peoples neurochemistries are all very different and unpredictable. So, when it comes to psychiatric medications it can often take more than one try to find the one that works. The truth is, science is not 100% sure about everything in the brain. Because you cannot cut into it a lot when a person is living we can't observe directly what is happening like we do with the rest of the system. The nerve cells that make up our brains are structurally identical to the ones that help us feel and move, so we still don't know why they can make us have thought, memory, and all that other stuff the brain does.

Now you understand that brain medicine isn't exact. No ones fault, it's just in the early parts of the journey of discovery. There were times when they didn't know exactly how the other internal organs worked either.

So, taking into account that everyones neurochemistry is different a certain percentage of people in the clinical trials are going to have exactly the opposite reaction to antidepressants - depression or anxiety. If it happens in some people it means they have to list it as a possible side effect. What the patient should do then, is talk to their doctor and switch to another antidepressant and see if that works better with their individial brain chemistry.

It's all about finding the right combination of chemicals in the pill that fits with the unique combination of chemicals in your brain!
