Which Medical School Is Better? (UCLA, USC)?

We Answered:

UCLA usually ranks higher in peer reviews, but USC also has a very good medical school. You would be lucky to be admitted to either of them. Both are among the best in the nation.

I'm still confused about college?

We Answered:

Honestly, It does not matter what school you go to as long as you get the education you need.

I reccommend a smaller school because it will give you an opprotunity to become closer with professors (for recommendation purposes), and you will have an easier shot at leadership and research opprotunities.

In order to become a doctor, you need a strong interest in science. Medical schools now a days prefer their students to have chemistry rather than biology degrees. Also, you may want to seriously consider a minor in spanish because many of the patients you come in contact with will speek the language.

When you register for classes, speak with your advisor about the classes you should take. Look at the basic requirements for a future graduate school you may be interested in so you can know what classes you HAVE to take. Most require 2 semesters of gen chem, organic chem, physics, statistics, biology, and etc.

Also, volunteer as much as possible at a hospital!! Best of luck and don't give up!!

am i planning the right education to become a doctor?

We Answered:

This plan can definitely work, but you don't actually have to go to a cheaper school to save your parents.

For starters, you can take out a student loan for your undergraduate degree. Payments are typically deferred until you have completed your education, so they wouldn't come up until you are done with medical school.

However, you may not even need a loan to go to a more expensive school. Scholarships! You're getting all A's and B's, so you should definitely be able to get some scholarships. Start applying now. Many are open to all high school students, not just seniors. Also, take your PSATs your junior year--it makes you eligible for another set of scholarships.

Start looking through on-line sites for scholarships AND go contact the college counselor at your high school. Local scholarships are a great option. Try a variety of on-line sites to find the scholarships, as some smaller scholarships will only be on one site.

It also won't hurt to beef up your resume. Actually, since you do have a couple of years before college, you have a chance to find scholarships you almost fit, and then get in the extracurricular or volunteer work to actually be eligible. You should also look into activities that are medically related. Volunteer work at a hospital is a good place to start.

am i choosing the right education to become a doctor?

It's definitely a good idea to try and save money on college. As far as everything else you said, it is waaaayyy too early to be thinking like that.
Even with a 4.0 and awesome mcats, you aren't guaranteed admission anywhere. Especially in california. If you're really interested in going to medical school, just get into college. Until then just try and have a good time as a kid. Nothing you do during high school other then getting accepted to college will have any impact on med school, and you most definitely cannot decide on the med school you'll go to before you get accepted. There are no guarantees in applying to med school.
