Any stat in (a group of drugs) is very good, the most studied one is pravastatin.
Statins in general, reduce the bad cholesterol level (LDL), and increase the good cholesterol (HDL). Rosuvastatin and atorvastatin can be taken just once a day, so they're comfortable. All medication have side effects, the most common with statins are nausea, headache and diarrhea, but this happens in less than 1% of all patients taking it, and when it happens, is self-limited (meaning, it will go away)
Pravastatin comes in a generic brand, (as good as the original), so it might be cheaper, i'm not sure if rosuvastatin and atorvastatin have a generic.
Personally, I've seen the cholesterol levels in patients on rosuvastatin diminish very quickly, of course, I have no scientific evidence about it being better on long term than pravastatine, that's just my point of view. Fortunately, no one close to me has high cholesterol, but if I had to prescribe something to my mother I'd choose pravastatine because there are tons of studies that have proven it's very good and safe.
