Lonnie Said:

Will Minute Clinic prescribe anti-malaria medicine for me?

We Answered:

Frelsun - There is no one "right" anti-malarial medicine. There are 4 main types of malaria that might infect people. All anti-malarials require a doctor's prescription. The choice of medicine will depend upon where you are going and how long you will be staying. The medicine is not routinely stocked in every pharmacy. Contact your local county or city health clinic. They have a Yellow Book with detailed worldwide info and best anti-malarial medicines. Your doctor could phone in the prescription to the pharmacy for you. Act now as it may take a couple of days for the pharmacy to get the anti-malarial medicine best for you.

Is Malaria a problem in the Philippines? ( I am a Canadian who plans to visit the areas around 'Davao' soon )?

We Answered:

If you are not going to forest areas, there is virtually no risk of malaria. Certainly not in the city. Dengue is probably a risk, but we can't live life in fear. What you can do is apply insect repellant or citronella-based (natural) repellant, and you'll be fine.

Willie Said:

Is it harmful to your health to perpetually take anti-malaria medicine?

We Answered:

It is impossible to create antibodies against malaria.

You need these drugs for prevention, unfortunately.
Malaria is caused by small parasites who live in red blood cells. The infamous fever episodes are the result of decaying red blood cells.

No one is able to become immune against malaria.

Jamie Said:

What's the best medicine against malaria virous or to protect my self agaist malaria?

We Answered:

If you live in Africa or southeast Asia, using bug spray and mosquito netting are the best defenses, as opposed to life long medication. If you're visiting a malaria endemic area, you should use the cdc.gov site to determine what resistant strains are prevalent. If you are not near in a warm, tropical area where malaria is common, then it is not worth your time and money to try to protect yourself from something incredibly improbable.

Erin Said:
