Medicine For Migraines

Rafael Said:

How can I get relief from sever migraines when no medicine is working?

We Answered:

I feel your pain.
I've tried billions of things over the past 6.5 years of constant headaches.
Here are my best tips:
-Find a Headache and Pain Relief Centre
-Nerve Blocks (takes the pain away completely for hours. After sucessive treatments they last longer and longer. Some people are cured by nerve blocks)
-Meditation and Belly Breathing (with practice i'm nowable to reduce the severity of my headaches/migraines.)
-Keep a pain diary. Learn your triggers.
-Never skip a meal (eat at regular times)
-Get regular sleep (same time and same amount each night)
-Drink plenty of H2O

Hope this helps.

what is the best medicine for migraines?

We Answered:

Sweetie, gosh, I feel so bad for you...I am a 24/7 sufferer, and it took so long for me to get to the point where I wasn't suffering 24 hours a day.
My dr., reg. dr. put me on Topopmax, which you have to gradually get your body used too, and it's an everyday medicine, so it dosen't stop the migraines...the imitrex, I was allergic too and had to immediately get off of, so the only thing that even remotely helped was narcotics, which I was taking about 16 a day, and still not killing the pain.
By the time I got to see the neurologist, I had been on the narcotics, ibuprofin, for two months and topomax 100 mgs a month....but still having migraines....
and get this, all these years, I had been treated for sinus and it was migraines all the entire time.
What I found out is that I was having what is called rebound headaches, and for some reason you can't take ibuprophin when you have migraines, and it really is true. My neuro, had it out with me the second time I went in and I didn't realize I thought it would be better to take the ibuprophin than a loratab or such for the pain when it wasn't bad enough for Maxalt which I take, even to today around twenty a month, and I'm up to 200 mg. of Topomax a day. But he told me under no circumstances can I take ibuprophin, and I stopped it and it did make a very big difference in my migraines. Alot less after the initial first week, also, stronge smells, smoke, bleach, but, i have no idea, why ibuprophin causes more migraines, but it does, so stay away from it.....I was taking it every day thinking it was so good for me, and helping me and it was, but it was really making it worse, and after they told me that, and I stopped it and got over the rebound headaches, you wouldn't believe the difference in the amount or the less headaches/migraines I had....good luck....it just takes time to find the righ meds and dr....I thought I was going to die there for months with them..or feel better banging my head against a wall with them, been through alot of pain, but nothing like migraines, you can't eat, sleep, your sick, nauseated, I lost so much weight noone new me in a matter of months, it' s horrible...and it's something I'm still dealing with, and I've found stress is a major factor with mine and you can't avoid stress all together being a single mom of two in college with no money, so I just try to deal, and manage, and thank God I have the maxalt to help in between...good luck

What is the best non prescription medicine for migraines?

We Answered:

When you feel one coming on, the best way to ward it off is:

Immerse feet in hot water and put an ice pack on your head. Sit still like this until you feel the sensation passing.
It forces the extra bloodflow from your head into your feet which relieves the pressure on your blood vessels and takes away the migraine.

I learned this is hydrotherapy class in massage school and it worked EVERY TIME for my migraines.

Also I agree with the Feverfew "natural remedy" to keep them at bay.

Should I start taking prescribed medicine for my migraines?

We Answered:

I fine Advil works for me. Also, a long warm shower or if you can handle it, go for a swim. My Dr told me years ago that swimming helps relieve migraines and I find that it helps.
