DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS
(Based on USDA guidelines)

Fresh food, free of preservatives, pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones
Cooking methods that minimize nutrient loss, i.e. light steaming and baking
Consume a variety of foods that maximize intake of all nutrients, particularly vegetables and whole grains

Calorie Consumption

Complex carbohydrates (grains, beans, vegetables, fruits) should represent approximately 50% of a woman’s daily calorie consumption
Protein should represent 20% to 30% of a woman’s daily calorie consumption. If she works out at least 3xweek, her protein requirement probably should be increased by approximately 20%
Total fats (less than 10% from saturated fats and cholesterol [< 300 mg]) should represent 30% of a woman’s daily calorie consumption or 15% to 20% if she is overweight or at high risk for CVD

Serving Sizes
(Serving sizes are calculated to meet the daily needs of complex carbohydrates, protein, fiber, total fats, and basic nutrients.)

Bread, cereal, pasta: 6-11 servings (eg ½ c., 1 slice bread = 1 serving)
Vegetables: 2-3 servings = 1 to 1 ½ c.
Fruit: 3-5 servings (1 serving = 1 med piece of fruit, ½ c. cut fruit or ¾ c. of fruit juice [unsweet])
Low-fat or nonfat dairy products: 2-4 servings (1 serving = 1 cup of milk, 8 oz of yogurt, or 1-2 oz of cheese)
Lean meat, skinless poultry, fish, soy products (40 g/day), legumes, eggs, nuts: 2-3 servings (1 serving = 1 egg or 10 nuts)
Oils are to be used sparingly (eg. 2 tsp/day on salads or vegetables), with emphasis on unrefined, cold-pressed oils, particularly olive and canola oils for consumption of essential fatty acids.
Sugars are to be used sparingly, with emphasis on maple syrup and honey because of the nutrients they contain.
Eight 8 oz glasses of water each day

Minimize or Avoid:

(Because of CVD, osteoporosis, and other chronic health problems)
Caffeinated beverages
Beverages with high phosphorus levels
Excessive sodium-containing foods (limit 2500 mg/day)
Trans-fatty acids in margarines, convenience goods, and oils made from partially hydrogenated vegetable oils
Alcoholic beverages

Terrence Said:

Are there any dangers to taking medicine for osteoporosis?

We Answered:

Drugs like actonel (bisphosphonates) can "rarely" cause osteonecrosis of the jaw (dead jaw).

I do not know what they do when the jaw bone dies.

The bone that forms does not have the natural structure of regular bone. I need to review the subject, but what I remember reading made the impression on me that vit d, calcium, green vegtables and proper exercise would be safer and less risky. Vitamin K from green vegtables is an important factor that is not commonly mentioned in bone strength.
