Oriental Medicine Schools

Erica Said:

what kind of degree do you need to have to get into an oriental medicine program?

We Answered:

"Oriental Medicine (TCM)" is quackery that even embarrasses modern Chinese educated people. TCM is based on ancient superstitious nonsense that was banned in China early in the 20th century, until it was cynically reintroduced by Mao Tse Tung mid-century for propaganda/patriotic reasons. It's ironic that TCM has more credibility among gullible Westerners today than it does in China.

The "accreditation" of such schools in California and elsewhere is ridiculous. The entire study of TCM is worthless, and the practice is potentially dangerous to patients. Do not waste your time and money on crackpot "Oriental Medicine".

Irma Said:

?I REALLY want to go to Oriental Mecdical/Acupuncture school. What can I do now to prepare? Advice needed!?

We Answered:

Go for it mate. Altmed needs intelligent people to run with its banner. it sounds like you fit this remit well. There are already plenty of intelligent people in conventional medicine.
Who knows with enough good people and research conventional and altmed may actually get together and see what they have in common rather than try and drive each other out of business. I think you should find out as much about conventional medicine as you can as well and also read all these books and websites. If you still want to pursue Acupuncture afterwards (which you probably will) you will do so properly informed form the opposing side.

Interesting that SkepDoc Describes Raynauds and Complex Regional pain syndrome as not being life threatening although both syndromes can lead to amputation being necessary. If a body part that needs amputating stays on the body will either Auto-amputate or the patient will become gravely ill and die. This is potentially life threatening Skepdoc.

Its also interesting that although you report an improvement he insists there is more to your story than you are letting on and that effectively something else is making you well whether you know it or not, yet he has failed to identify it.

So placebo is about endorphin release and sticking needles in people seems to be real good at that....
So we should stop it right?
Why?

It never ceases to amaze me that when someone gets well when altmed is used it is because of placebo. These people have usually tried to conventional system first and no joy. if belief was all that was needed why didn't they get better under the conventional protocol?

When did the Japanese invade Korea and kill many Koreans?

We Answered:

I don't know if I can answer all of your questions. But I will try. Japanese forces invaded Korea in 1593. But they were defeated with Chinese help. Korea has always been a bone of contention between China and Japan. After Japan defeated China in the 1894-95 it increased its influence in the 'Hermit Kingdom". In 1910 Japan took complete control of the country. Japan implemented a policy of assimilation to force Koreans into Japanese culture. The Japanese language was used in Korean schools and Korean language newspapers were closed down. During World War II, millions of Koreans were used in forced labor camps by the Japanese. Other Orientals who live or work in Japan and understand Japanese claim that very little of Japanese exploitation of Korea is mentioned in school textbooks. I hope that this has been a help to you.

Leslie Said:

Does the military hire acupuncturists and oriental medicine practicioners?

We Answered:

Yes, the army does employ acupuncturists as of 2007.

HOWEVER, big warning...the army continues to contract out most of it's medical needs, which can lead to the elimination of a specialty within the military community.

Your best bet is to speak to a recruiter and talk to him or her about a direct commission. That is something only open to medical specialists. You do not go to basic training (I couldn't believe my ears when i learned that one), you simply start day one as a medical officer.

Two of the doctors I know started out as 1st Lieutenants, one was direct commissioned to captain.

Best of luck to you! Remember, a recruiter can confirm whether or not such an opening exists. If it doesn't go in the contract, it's not real.

Good luck!
