Oh yeah and drink plenty of water and I mean plenty. And rest. Rest is very important. You don't have to cook, clean, do the dishes, milk it for all it's worth.

You are asking for big trouble suppressing a cough - this means everything, mucous etc will clog up and cause even more problems. You need an expectorant to get the mucous up off your chest.
You should really see your doctor - but try covonia or ask the pharmacist.

As far as what is best, ask your pharmacist for a recommendation. There are so many different preparations that address many different types of symptoms, a "one size fits all" answer isn't possible, and your pharmacist will have a good idea based on your son's age, weight, and prescription profile including medication allergies/sensitivities. Also, the larger pharmacies will carry their own brands of OTC cold/cough preparations that are identical in every way to the name brands and are always much cheaper (unless there is a substantial sale going on with the name branded items).
