Is there anything over the counter that will work for a dog ear infection?

We Answered:

There are different types of ear infections that dogs can get. I would not advise you to give your pet some medication that could be the wrong one, it might make your dog sick.

Some vets will let you make payments. Ask your friends If they know of a vet in your area that will do that, and perhaps ask if they could donate 2 to 5 dollars toward the vet bill. If they do not know of one then start calling vets from the phone book.

My daughter has worked for different vets while putting herself through college. She told me how some of the vets will accept payments. She also worked for three years at an emergency vet clinic, which is how I learned how dangerous it can be to treat what we think is wrong with our pets.

Call the RN on duty at your Pediatricians Office and find out if it is ok. I know we have given my daughter Children's Tylenol and Children's Cough Syrup while she was on Antibiotics.

Any over the counter medicine for a dog ear infection?

We Answered:

You can use this simple, affordable homemade solution to prevent problems, once the current infection is cleared up: http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/ears.html
It's very gentle and effective. I can't use OTC or even prescription ear washes on my dog because they irritate her ears. This doesn't irritate her at all yet it prevents ear infections quite effectively.

Any time you suspect your dog has an ear infection, it's best to go ahead & take the dog to the vet, because only the vet can look carefully inside the ear to determine if the eardrum is intact or has been ruptured by the infection. If you use an earwash, homemade product, or even leftover medicine from a previous infection in a dog whose eardrum has ruptured, it can cause permanent damage to the ear and possibly deafness. It's possible for your dog to have a ruptured ear drum and not really act like it's in pain - my dog's ear drum ruptured once from a deep infection without any visible symptoms, and the only clue she ever gave that there was a problem was to begin shaking her head occasionally.

I would suggest that you go ahead & take your dog to the vet for this infection, and then after the ears are cleared up, begin using the purple power ear solution from the link above. My dog used to cost me a small fortune for ear infection vet bills on a regular basis until I started using the purple power solution. But she hasn't had a single infection since I started using it a couple of years ago.

Another thing you might want to consider: ear infections are often associated with allergies. Check your dog food ingredients: does it contain soy, corn, wheat, or artificial coloring? Those ingredients often cause allergy issues for dogs - try to find a food without those ingredients. My dog does well on Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. Canidae and Wellness are also both excellent brands that are less likely to cause allergy problems.

If the ear problems continue even after starting the purple solution and changing your dog's diet, you might want to see a veterinary dermatologist for allergy testing.

Hope this helps!

Are there any over the counter medicines for ear infection in children?

We Answered:

While there exist over-the-counter (OTC) remedies and medications that can alleviate the pain and symptoms of an ear infection, there are no OTC measures that kill the bacteria in the middle ear space that actually cause the infection. The "feel better" measures that work the best are oral pain medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or oral pain/antiinflammatory medications, like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin). Topical anesthetic drops are also available that are applied into the ear canal and basically numb the inflamed ear drum from the outside. But since the infection is caused by bacteria in the middle ear space on the other side of the eardrum, nothing applied externally can help kill the bacteria through the intact eardrum.
There are those that say that not all middle ear infections really need antibiotics. Before there were doctors and antibiotics, most middle ear infections did ultimately improve on their own. But a significant percentage of those untreated ear infections did not "go away on their own" and led to serious complications such as progression of the infection to the neighboring mastoid bone (mastoiditis), ruptured ear drums, deafness, and even spread of the infection to the spinal fluid surrounding the brain (meningitis). Given the safety and experience we have with antibiotics today, I think that antibiotics are important tools in treating ear infections, along with the "feel better" medications.
