Antonio Said:

What are the best undergraduate schools for medicine?

We Answered:

If you are interested in neuroscience and psychology I would look around for schools that have good psych/neuro programs more so than for a school that gets lots of people into medicine. Medicine is highly competitive and if you have to apply several times you might end up getting a master in one of those areas, so you want to focus on your major as well as pre-med courses. And something to keep in mind is that while large schools might let you major in neuroscience versus biology, small schools give you a better opportunity to get to know your professors, do research projects and ultimately get better reference letters when you are looking to apply to medicine. Good luck with things.

How strict are Canadian professional schools (medicine, optometry...) about having a full course load?

We Answered:

This is for medicine; not sure about optometry:

It depends on which school you're interested in, actually. All schools in Canada have different requirements. The University of Toronto, for example, will not disqualify your application for not carrying a full load. However, you will not be eligible for the GPA calculation system (where they drop your lowest 8 credits if you apply in 4th yr and later). For Schulich, they will only count years in which you had a full course load for their GPA cut-off, etc. The best idea would be to contact the schools or look up their websites. Usually, they are pretty strict about the stipulations they make on their websites.

Good luck!

Nicole Said:

Is there any difference between (mainstream) medical schools and schools of osteopathic medicine?

We Answered:

Osteopathic physicians receive training in spinal manipulation (like chiropractors) and have somewhat of a more holistic approach to the patient. Osteopaths are practicing in just about every medical community and there really is in difference between a DO and MD is a clinical setting, except a DO might suggest therapies not usually recommended by a MD.
