Sea Sickness Medicine

Norma Said:

What's the best medicine to take for sea sickness?

We Answered:

Dramamine is very good. The only problem is that it makes you quite groggy. So I switched to Bonine. Sooo much better. For my last cruise a friend suggested that I ask the pharmasist for the generic type of Bonine that does NOT need a prescription but you need to ask for it at the pharmacy counter. Its a little less costly than Bonine, and you get a bottle full of pills rather than a few in blister packs. Also, test it before you go on your trip. A half of a tablet is all I need.

Is there any safe & effective sea-sickness prevention medicine for a toddler?

We Answered:

There is a safe, any age friendly, ear drop. I do not know the name of it without being at home looking at it. You put a little drop behind, not in, each ear at the soft spot near the end of the lobe. It's just a little dark colored bottle and for the life of me I can not remember the name. It can be found at CVS, Walgreens, and Riteaid, near the other motion sickness meds. I only needed it so I could go on rides with my son at amusement parks, I love roller coasters but couldn't ride because I'd lose my balance and then get sick.

What is the best medicine to take to prevent sea sickness?

We Answered:

Don't go to sea?

I spent over 6 years on the sea and nothing really helped and I never got over it. Try the Dramamine but don't take more then 2.. it can make you drowsy.

What is a good way to get over sea sickness on a cruise ship other than medicine?

We Answered:

Ok, some suggestions, in no particular order:

1) drink beer ... it really works... I think it might be the carbonation... but it works...

2) those wrist bands (some say they work, some say they don't.)

3) the patches you put under your ear (need a prescription so a bit of a pain, but they do work - you might consider it medicine.)

4) Don't go on the boat... :-) Actually, I sail a bit; I hardly ever feel seasick even in the worst of conditions. But, I have had passengers on my boat who are not so lucky. For people with mild conditions, (1) above works ok; slightly more conditions, 2 works, worse yet condition, 3 does not seem to fail.... and some medications work as well.

But on a cruise ship... not likely a problem... depending on time of year and where. They are large and pretty stable.

I am taking my 4 year old on a cruise in Jan. What would be the best medicine for him to prevent sea sickness?

We Answered:

Check with your personal doctor. He knows your child better than we do.
