Medicine Personal Statement; if you can have a look and give me any comments?

We Answered:

It's good keep it as it is. The book reading doesn't add much as anyone and their mom can read a book on medicine. I think overall it's a compelling essay and your many accomplishments shine through in it and I get a good sense of who you are and what you've done with your life. Good job but if you had to remove something take out the golfing or the badminton but probably the badminton as no one likes that sport. I personally love it and I play doubles but it's not a "cool" sport to many admissions officers and golf makes you look more sophisticated.

After reading this article, I'm not sure if medicine is right for me?

We Answered:

1. One article does not mean much. It is something to consider, for sure, but don't make a decision based on one article. Don't forget that 1/3 of the doctors DO like their jobs. If you are really concerned, try to find out what is different about that 1/3 and make your decision accordingly.

2. What are your other options? Do they pay more than being a doctor? Will they make you happy? Being a doctor can be rough, but so can a lot of other jobs. At least being a doctor pays decently and you are helping people. The fact is that you might hate your career regardless of what you choose to do. If that happens, then you try something else. People do it all the time.

3. You'll never know if you'll like it if you don't try. So get more information. Talk to more doctors about it and get their opinions. Take some classes. Keep volunteering. You'll figure out what is right for you. Good luck!

How will this effect her coginitive development?

We Answered:

I wouldn't think her cognitive development would be impaired in any way. Her hormonal balance, if stabilized with treatments, should be OK. I would think they would have had to have a doctor sign off on this, in order to get it done. I think that there would have been more than one doctor having to agree to this. The hospital that the surgery was performed in would have had their say in whether it should have been done or not. Whose to say that it was the parent's idea? It could have been the doctor's idea and the parents went along with their diagnosis. Some things can seem to be painful and tragic, but this could possibly be a blessing for the child. Who are we to judge these parents as they struggle to make decisions for a child that will never be able to live on her own and lead a normal life.

Medicine Personal Statement if you can have a look :) ?

We Answered:

Firstly- GOOD LUCK! I am really hoping to do medicine, but I am currently in S5.
Obviously, I am not really qualified to tell you 'This is great/ terrible", but from what I have already read on UCAS and various others, this is well up there. You have a really succinct style, having obviously thought about what a career in medicine entails. Your community involvment and voluntary work is also excellent to posess (from what I hear) and I would certainly see no reason why I shouldn't welcome you to my university if I were the admissions secretary. It is slightly long- remember that these secretaries will be delving through hundreds of PS's and you want to stand out without being too long and drawn out- although it is long in a great way, detailing all you have done.

If you don't mind me asking: Are you from Glasgow? (I am) How did you arrange to attend the symposium by RCSPG? And do you have any tips for me, who will be in your shoes this time next year :S One last thing... why not apply to Glasgow? Good luck...

How will the following hender the normal development of ashley?

We Answered:

Personally, I think that the parents reasoning is a slippery slope. I know how difficult these decisions are from a personal perspective. But I think such treatment may be against the person's best interests and would not ensure the outcome the parents envisioned. Despite their having the best intentions, I would not advocate this treatment mostly for fear of unforeseen repercussions to the person and fear that it would not accomplish the goal I sought.
