Primary-care Sports Medicine specialist?

We Answered:

After high school you'll need 11 years of training before you can apply for a fellowship.

Here is information about one such fellowship; I imagine most are similar:

The reality of medicine is that most of us change our minds in medical school about what we want to spend our lives doing.

Residency is the training that you do after graduation from medical school. All physicians get pretty much the same training in med school. We learn our specific specialty in residency, which is a minimum of 3 years, and can be as much as 7-10 years for subspecialists.

Salary is immaterial. If you're going into medicine for the money, run the other direction right now. Things are bad and getting worse. By the time you get your medical degree, we might all be government employees. Do it only if you love it - otherwise, you'll be a miserable person.

Worry about residency programs when you're finishing med school, and about fellowship programs when you're completing your residency. It's silly to even think about it now - like a toddler choosing a college major. If you want to be a physician, go for it, but don't limit yourself at this very early stage of the game - keep your options open.

what colleges on the east coast offer good sports medicine programs?

We Answered:

A good way to learn about what schools affor certain programs is through searches at princetonreview.com and collegeboard.com. There you can look for schools in specific states. Im currently interested in East Carolina University and I know they have a sports medicine program. If you dont want to exactly be an athletic trainer you could teach sports medicine to high school students (I took sports medicine in high school), or many schools hire emergancy responders and trainers for their athletic programs. More information can be found about careers at the above websites. Good Luck.
