Timothy Said:
Can I get a job in the sports medicine field with a biology degree? We Answered:
That is a good choice but you can always take up other pre-med courses like nursing, med-tech, or physical therapy just in case you don't want to push through medicine. At least with those courses you would get a decent job compared to getting a BS in Bio, you might end up being only a teacher but that always doesn't happen.Arthur Said:
Sports Medicine Job with MD but no surgery? Help!?We Answered:
Becoming a sports medicine specialist is certainly an option. Become a physician and complete your residency in either Family Med or Internal Med, then complete a fellowship in sports meds. You won't be a surgeon, but will probably have to observe and participate in some surgeries during your fellowship. Your other consideration would be to become a physiatrist...a physician in rehabilitative medicine.Vivian Said:
What jobs are their for someone who studies sports medicine? We Answered:
I think there are only two occupations that could be considered sports medicine. An orthopedic surgeon specializes in bones, joints and the skeletal muscular structure. He uses surgery to repair torn ligaments, damaged cartilage, broken bones, torn rotator cuffs and the other injuries that occur as a result of sports activities. Because he's a doctor, his profession requires medical school and years of residency afterwards to learn his surgical skills. A physical therapist works with patients to rehabilitate them and teach them how to use their muscles and joints correctly after surgery.Elmer Said:
Do sports medicine physical therapist get paid the same as other specialties? We Answered:
There is no particular payscale difference for those in sports med unless you happen to have a skill (a particular specialty or certification) that is in demand and someone is willing to pay for it.However, the APTA sponsered sports med cert is certainly a place to start.
The sports med circuit is probably the most competitive...most people (especially men) tend to flock towards this area.
The highest pay tends to be with staffing agencies, nursing homes and home health.
