Marcia Said:

Im 16 and want to study medicine, give me something to read.?

We Answered:

A classic that has been around a long time is Microbe Hunters by Paul deKruif. I think it is still in print. You may need the help of your librarian to find The Century of the Surgeon by Juergen Thorvald, published in 1963. It is a great history of surgery since the discovery of anesthesia. More modern books include Level IV: Viral Hunters of the CDC by McCormick and Fisher-Hoch (about Ebola and other hemorrhagic viruses in Darkest Africa) and the Knife Man - Blood, Body Snatching and the advent of modern surgery by Wendy Moore.

I really can't recommend Dr. Shem's book to a 16 year old.

Rebecca Said:

Hi! It's nice to see you all online. I wonder which field will be better to study: medicine or business....!

We Answered:

Actually that would depend on what your natural talents and abilities consist of. I would suggest you take some career assessments first and compare the results (about three should suffice). Then think about the things you really like to do that come naturally and what your ideal job would consist of (working alone or with people, in an office or out in the field, computer work or hands on, etc). Then go to bls.gov, go to the occupational outlook handbook and look up business type major/career titles and then look up medical type major/career titles and decide what fits best with what you want and can do. This research may also give you other professions to consider that you haven't even thought of or considered yet. . .Good luck to you.

Melinda Said:

can i got to a real college and an online college at the same time?

We Answered:

There are no reputable medicine schools online, and you would need ALL your time, energy, and concentration for medical school.

Doris Said:

is there a way to home study medicine starting from ZERO?

We Answered:

As far as I know, there are ways that you can study and learn on your own (e.g. books, online podcasts, iTunes U, etc.), but there is no way to obtain a professional license or certificate in a health care field without official training, clinical experience, and passing exams.

There are "hybrid" online/in person courses for some lower level health care professionals, and you might be able to become an EMT, paramedic, or even a nurse that way.

I would suggest that you ask at the Student Doctor forums about ways that a "non-traditional" student can become a doctor.

Leon Said:

Are there any online resources where I can study medicine for free?

We Answered:

to be a doctor at a point in university you would have to disect a dead human being, whether you want to be surgeon or not.
