About Registered Nurse

Jerry Said:

How should I go about being a Registered Nurse?

We Answered:

The only part you can possibly take online are some of the pre-reqs, but none of the science pre-reqs because they have labs associated with them. None of the nursing core can be done online either. Contact a nursing school at a close by community college & make an appointment to speak with the nursing advisor for some first hand info. Nursing is one career where you need to be physically in a classroom.

What do I have to do after I get my associates degree in health science to become a registered nurse?

We Answered:

Yes to nursing school. You have 2 options:

1) get a 2 year RN degree from a community/tech college
2) get a 4 year RN degree from a regular college

Honestly, your associates in health science won't be that much help.

how to become a registered nurse and work in the united states?

We Answered:

The most popular program is the associate degree, which takes an average of two to three years to complete. One of the perks associated with this path is that once you've obtained the degree, you can apply for an entry-level position that offers benefits—including tuition reimbursement and college credit toward your two-year bachelor's degree. This choice also provides valuable hands-on experience in the field while earning an education. Going straight for the bachelor's program takes four years, and a diploma can take three to five years.

After completing any of these programs a nurse must pass a national licensing examination. Nursing degree education requirements vary based on state, and a nurse may sometimes be required to take the local NCLEX-RN examination to work in a new state, so make sure you research the requirements in the state where you want to practice by contacting the state board of nursing.

What is the difference in being a registered nurse or having your BS in Nursing?

We Answered:

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is offered at four year universities. A BSN will more likely (depending on the school) have more english, humanities, math, and psychology courses required. The first two years are generally spent doing these 'basic' courses along with the nursing pre-requisites (like Anatomy/Physiology, Microbiology, Chemistry). People with BSNs usually have better opportunities in going into management. In addition, they also are ready to go into graduate school upon completion of the BSN. A Bachelors degree usually has about 120 hours of courses required.

An Associates degree in nursing is offered at community colleges and some tech schools. It will usually have much less humanities, sciences, psychology, etc requirements. But you will still come out with your RN, like in the BSN. There are programs that are special for RNs that allow them to complete their BSN in about a year or two. An Associates degree usually requires about 60-70 hours of courses.

Both BSN and ASN have the same amount of clinical hours.

You didn't mention what province you are in so I can't list the schools in your area.
