About Registered Nurses

Stephen Said:

To all Registered Nurses, what interested you into entering this profession?

We Answered:

I'm not an RN yet, but I want to be one because I find a great passion in helping those out there. I like working in community and pubilc health settings helping out the poor, homeless, hungry, drug addicts, alcoholics, sex addicts and offenders, troubled teens, at-risk youth, and so fourth...
I also like the scope of knowledge that is provided. I like thinking like a scientist and studying sciences.

What's the difference between License Vocational Nurses and Registered Nurses?

We Answered:

I found this on the 1st site listed below: "The LPN/LVN licensure usually requires about a year of course work, with these programs frequently offered through junior colleges, community colleges, or vocational schools. This level of nurse is frequently employed in large facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes, though they may also be found in small doctors’ offices or in some home health situations. The LPN/LVN is a skilled provider, but has limits placed on their scope of practice (many states, for example, limit medication administration by these nurses) and thus generally commands a lower salary than the RN. Nonetheless, LVN/LPNs are in demand, and many nurses are either content to practice at this level or use it is a launching pad to RN licensure."

Mainly, the differences fall into the categories of type of licensure, scope of duties, length (and depth) of school and degree awarded. In my state, RN's command about 12,000 a year more to start. However, their education is 2 yrs vs 1 yr. Your best bet IMHO is to get your LVN or LPN, find a job that has tuition reimbursement and go for your RN, preferably with a BS. Good luck!

How much do registered nurses usually make?

We Answered:

At least $55,000/year in the NYC, California, and Arizona areas.
Sign-on bonuses are for specialty areas, which a new nurse would not be eligible for.

How many days a week do Registered Nurses work?

We Answered:

Depends on your schedule and if you work part or full time. Many nurses work 12 hour shifts and therefore only need to work 3 days per week. Very few nurses work full-time, 40 hours per week, because salaries are decent and most hospitals give you benefits at part time status.

If you can't live on your own only working part time as a nurse, you aren't managing your money properly. A single person with no dependents should have no problem supporting themselves on a part-time nurse's salary. You'll be making around $25-$35 dollars to start, so do the math from there. If you worked half-time at $35 that's still $36k per year. If you work 75% of full time @ $35 that's $54k per year.
