Advanced Nursing Careers

Joy Said:

What is the quickest way to advance in nursing career?

We Answered:

As a fellow nurse: education is the key. I hear you, I love nursing, but I've been doing it for 20+ years and I can't see doing bedside nursing for much longer. Get your BSn and see where that gets you. NP or manager depends on your interests. I have the same concerns; I want to get my masters, but have no interest in either you listed. I've been thinking about a masters in nursing with an emphasis in computers---I can't remember what it is exactly called, but it is online. So there are so many options for nurses-Good luck!

A better command of the English language will help you with everything in life. From understanding difficult diagnoses, to dissecting doctor's poorly written orders, to sounding more professional in interviews and with patients and families.

CNA certificate & nursing career question(s)?!

We Answered:

Getting your CNA license is a great start. It will help you to decide if this is something you really want to do. Nursing is a challenging and difficult career. It is not for everyone. Most LPN/LVN schools are 2 years long. If you want to eventually be an APRN then you will also need to get your bachelors degree in nursing. After you have your RN then you can continue onto your masters degree in whatever advanced practice area you are interested. Total to get there...6years. I am an RN. I was a CNA first. THen I went straight for my bachelors and was never an LPN. This worked well for me. I am not sure about the homeschooling thing. I have never heard of this being a barrier to getting into college. ANother thing...nursing school is competitive and depending on where you are from it can be hard to get in. You need to have at least a 3.0 average to even be considered for most nursing programs. Nursing is great though. I have been an RN for 5 years and I make almost 70,000 a year. I live in an area where cost of living is pretty low, so wages aren't as high as some other areas. It is a pretty comfortable living for my lifestyle, but like I said, nursing is not for everyone. It can be really really hard. Good luck.

Mathew Said:

what training do you need to advance in nursing career?

We Answered:

In the US, it's all about higher education. Get a master's degree in a specialty area of your interest. Get plenty of work experience under your belt.

Advancing in any career is usually about acquiring more education and work experience, and it's something that takes time and dedication and will not happen overnight.

Advancing in Nursing career... any suggestions?

We Answered:

I'm only going to answer this because my mother is a nurse and my sister is in nursing school, seven years or so after she completed her CNA course.

The RN program is quite hard to get into and is also quite competitive, which makes no sense whatsoever because of the nursing shortages. She would recommend taking on a CNA program, whether at a hospital or nursing home, just to get a feel of what you want to or don't want to do. Then you can go on into anesthesiology or neo-natal care, LPN or RN and the field is wide open from there. My best advice would be to get experience first. Because no matter which job you do choose, it will make you money.

It is very hot career, and very difficult to get in Nurse in California.

All colleges are 4 to 10: 1, some schools do lottery, some schools do waiting list around 3 to 5 years.

Nurse is very hot, many first year graduates get $80K/ year ,average $120,000 in CA.

But be aware, many hospitals will cut nurse salary in next a few year, because so many lost jobs, no job means no insurance, they will not either seeking medical care or without paying bill, who can afford $14,000/year medical insurance for a family of 4.

And so many nurse graduates plus huge Filipino and Indian Nurses get licenses in US, If you don't do it in $25/hr, many are waiting up for the position

If you are young, try to get Bachelor or Master degree, and get special training such as Surgery, ICU.. .
