All Types Of Nursing Careers

Douglas Said:

Nursing - What is the career in nursing like? All details if possible?

We Answered:

I have been a RN almost 13 years. I get paid very well, but work very very hard for my money. The best type of nursing to get into depends on you. What are you interested in? Labor and Delivery? Pediatrics? Cancer patients (oncology)? Elderly? When in nursing school you will get an idea of what kind of nursing you will want to do. The good thing about nursing is that if your bored with say med/surg you can go work in the OR, transfer to Labor and Delivery or even go to home health ( Loved it!) You never stop learning and for the most part nursing is almost recession proof, and I meant to say almost. Most states are experiencing a nursing shortage so new grads have thier pick of jobs, and should always be able to find a joob, may not be one you like, but always a job.

I worked high risk cardiac/stepdown ICU for about 7 years and then 5 years of home health. I then taught LPN school for a semester and am now working in Long term acute care (vent weaning, huge wounds). I am very tired at the end of my 12 hr shift, but really like the folks I work with and actually had my students there for clinicals. Good Luck to you and if you have more questions email me, I will be happy to try to answer them.

Need help deciding what nursing program to start with?

Ok....an MA, is basically the same thing as a PA, so when you go into the doctors office their the person who brings you back to the room you will be examined in, weights you takes a brief history and gets your bloodpressure and what not....and then htey leave. I htink the training for this is like a year?...A CNA usually works in the hospital under direct RN supervision doing tasks that the nurse is too busy for, such as a bed bath, or feeding a patient who requires total care, plus taking vital signs...they usually have 7-10 patients where as a nurse would have 5-6. an LPN is starting to get phased out, b/c they do not have as much training as BSN/RNs and are paid less, I don't know much about their skills but every nurse i've worked with has had a BSN/RN and most hospitals I know of look for those nurses(at least thats what i've been told). These days BSN/RNs can work in hosptials/schools/doctorsoffices/camps/c… pretty much anywhere, I'm mostly familiar w/ the hosptial setting.....the nurses job is to asses hte patient and keep the physician/team updated on the patients condition...also to make sure to draw and blood or other labs that need to be done and get them to the lab...give meds and monitor for side effects, and also do bed baths, change the patient feed them and take some time to talk to them.
I hope this was helpful
