Yup ER is common enough place to see male nurses. So is the psychiatric ward or mental hospital. Something about being strong enough to hold down confused patients and the fact he is less likely to be sexually assaulted. I am an ICU nurse and we do have a fair number of guys.

I do think that male nurses can be found in most places except probably, gynaecology. I think that is best left to our female counterparts :-P

It's a lot more work to care for post surgical patients than just keeping them comfortable and reassured, but yes, that is part of the job. Nursing is a balance between providing emotional, educational, physical, and functional support. You have to be a critical thinker and have finely tuned assessment skills so that you know what is going on with your patient at all times, and when and how to act when things aren't right. Post surgical patients can quickly take a turn in status and have urgent needs.

There are some areas of nursing which are higher stress than others. Hospital nursing in general is going to have some degree of stress. It also depends on your personality type and what kinds of things you personally find stressful and what your stress threshhold is in general. Some people might not necessarily think they deal well with stress, but when challenged they find they can and do enjoy working in a faster paced or more critical setting, like ER or ICU.

Hospice nursing is an area where there is a lot of empathic interactions, and the focus is comfort for the dying patient. But yeah, there's that whole dying patient part that comes at the end. . . every time. Some people do really well with it and see the beauty in a "good" death and facilitate that process with great skill.
