How do I choose a career?

"...If there was any way to make good money working with horses I would do it, but I know it's pretty much impossible...."

If you've already put up a huge obstacle for yourself by thinking this way....why bother trying?

Yes. There are LOTS of ways to make LOTS of money in the horse industry. For people who are creative and determined enough to find those ways.

Ever hear of Pat Parelli? lol (ok. bad joke!)

But seriously, there are a lot of big name trainers who got that way through determination, hard work and the love for horses.....Jonathan Field from Canada, Richard Winters from Calif, John Lyons, Clinton Anderson, etc...

Becoming a "horse whisperer" can be a good way to make good money. BUT of course, you need to be GOOD for real. But if you are determined and really have a passion, you can do it.

Also, working as a massage therapist for horses. I personally met a wonderful massage therapist who is making the big money by having big money clients.

There's acupuncture, there's barefoot trimmer, etc....

It's who you can get to be your client ..... people with $ that can make the difference....and at the same time, you can help out the local rescues with your skills.

Some people say find a job that will pay you a decent wage and forget about your goals and dreams.

I say follow your goals and dreams and you will eventually find a way to earn a living doing what you love.

Personally, 27 is not too old to go back to school and get the degree that would allow you to practice whatever you want. Anything that is worth doing takes time, has a lot of hoops, and is rarely easy.

It seems as though you are saying contradictory things, as you want one thing, but are not willing to do what it takes. I think we are all in those positions at some time in our life, and if you have the right support group you can do whatever will make you happy.

Best of luck,

You have to first decide what you value most. If your 'biggest passion' is horses you have to make the conscientious choice 'can I walk away from what I love most in life.' But if horses only carry your attention slightly more than say psychology or interior design etc. I would recommend combining your interests or settling for a lesser concern (i.e. money or commute time or location etc.). If you have an inquisitive or bothersome temperament don't settle for money. You would most likely just end up doing something unsatisfying and wind up fundamentally unfulfilled.

But judging by your question you seem to have a lot of diverse interests, so perhaps settling for an outside factor could work in your favor. But in short try to combine your interests. With a decision like this and limited time combining interests is best chance to do something you'll love.

Hopefully that helps.

Dear One, I don't know if you have been to college or not. In college, we can learn what we are interested in through taking all of the prerequisites. A masters degree is not that far away, and you are still young. If you haven't been to college, you could start now. It will be a few years from now anyway!

You could combine therapy and horses. I have heard of therapists working with autistic children in animal therapy. Also other people, people who have had trauma in their lives and they need to heal. The animals help them through comfort and being involved in something bigger than themselves. If you don't want to do the work to get your masters degree in therapy, I guess you could work with therapists who would want to do this kind of work.

The Meyers Briggs inventory is very accurate in predicting a person's skills and aptitude. When you are a therapist, you teach also. You might also want a teaching credential for the horse therapy. You might check it out and see what credentials you might need.

These were my ideas. I wish you the best of luck in all you do. I am sure you will make it in the world. You are intelligent, have motivation, and have a great imagination. Best wishes.
