Career Opportunities In Nursing

Dora Said:

Career in Sonography, Nursing or Biology?

We Answered:

I think it all depends on what your priorities are. A job in the health field is great because you'll always have a job. Even with the plummeting economy, there is still a demand for nurses and doctors, etc. It is a very social job and you will never be lonely.

The thing about a biology job is that in order for it to really matter, you need a lot of school. Assuming you have finished the bio degree, then you have to go on to graduate school, and then post doc, and then start at a university. There aren't many jobs out there in the science field, and you have to be willing to move anywhere in the country to follow the work. Certain fields have more funding (ie cancer research get a ton of money, as opposed to plant evolutionary history). The good thing about research is that it is your work, and you get to travel everywhere in the world to present it to other people and share ideas with fellow scientists. It is also a very isolating job, where you have to write a lot and spend a lot of time reading other people's work.

If you don't have to worry about resources, then go for the science. If you do have to worry about resources, then go for the health profession. You can always go back to school.

I say finish one thing at a time. I would get a bio degree first, because it also fulfills a lot of the nursing requirements, and then once you finish, you can see what decision you want to make.
