Colleges For Nursing

Samuel Said:

What do I have to major in to be a nurse? What are some of the best colleges for nursing?

We Answered:

There are associate degree programs ( 2 years) and BSN programs ( 4 years). Prior to admission you need high school biology, math, chemistry, and 2 years of a foreign language.
Once in a nursing program you will study anatomy, chemistry, physiology, nutrition, math, sociology, psychology, and some electives. Your major would be nursing.

You will also do clinical where you work in various area of nursing such as medical, surgical, psychiatric, pediatrics, rehabilitation, ER, ICU, long term care, etc. Any school that offers an accredited nursing program is good. Make sure the nursing program is accredited. Most schools require you to maintain a certain GPA. Following graduation you will be qualified to take a state test to become registered.

There are also LPN/LVN programs ( 12-18 months) The requirements for admission are similar to an RN program and the courses of study are also similar but less intense and you spend less time in each area. Following graduation you are qualified to take a state test to become licensed. RNs generally have more responsibility, and earn higher wages than LPNs/LVNs. Many LPNs go onto earn their RN with LPN to RN bridge programs.
