Dental Nurse Career

Violet Said:

Im doing a dental nurse course and wondered how i can further my career when i have qualified?

We Answered:

You wouldn't be able to get onto the undergraduate dentistry degree with no GCSE and A Levels (In biology etc). You could consider aiming towards the graduate dentistry course though, I have a friend who's currently doing it. You could use the course you are doing now to get onto a health/science related uni degree, and then go onto the 4 year graduate dentistry course. It would mean 7 years uni study in total, but if its what you really want to do it will be worse it.

You could consider becoming a dental hygienist or technician, these careers would enable to progress past being a dental nurse. Good luck.

Marie Said:

what subjects do i need to take in A levels to be a DENTAL NURSE?

We Answered:

Maths and sciences, bio, physics

Betty Said:

Which is a better career being a dental hygienist or a registered nurse and why? Please give reasons?

We Answered:

I don't know much about dental hygienists, but what I will say about nursing is that there are limitless opportunities in nursing, if you get sick of what you're doing, there's always something else that is completely different from what you've done before. As a dental hygienist, all you can do is work on people's mouths. As a nurse, I can be a bedside nurse in any one of hundreds of specialty areas like cardiac, orthopedics, labor & delivery, OR, ER, etc. I could be a nurse manager. I could be a nurse educator, teaching in nursing schools or training nurses in a hospital. I could work for a home health care agency and work with people in their homes instead of the hospital. I could become a nurse practitioner and essentially function like a doctor. I could work as a school nurse, or a jail nurse, or a public health nurse. Or I could get a job with a travel nurse agency and take short 12 week assignments all over the US and see a little bit of the world.

Raymond Said:

Would you take up a career being a Dental Hygiene Or Registered Nurse?

We Answered:

I'm a little bias cuz I'm registered nurse myself but I would do nursing because the pay is usually better and the growth opportunities are amazing. As a Dental Hygienists all you do is clean teeth but as a nurse you can be a labor and delivery nurse, ER nurse, ICU, wound care nurse, Surgery nurse, and the list can go on and on. You can do so much as a nurse and you are not just limited to cleaning teeth. Below is a registered nurse website that is helpful....it is ran by a RN.

Going for job interview - completely new career - Dental nurse. Any tips?

We Answered:

Good on you girl! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that you get this job!
I 've been a dental nurse for more years than i care to remember and i really do enjoy my job.
When you attend your interview 2 Moro make sure you look really smart, but not to over the top, dont wear any jewellery and try to leave any make up to the bare minimum, first impressions can make all the difference.
Be as natural as possible, let them see the real you, if you have a humorous side let them see this side to you, a sense of humour in this job really does get you thorough the day at times, but also let them see your gentler side, you'll be meeting people from all walks of life in this job and you need to be able to communicate with them on all levels.
Ask questions, try not to sit there and let them do all the talking, you need to let them see that your intrested in working in this field, ask questions about the surgery and the treatments the supply, do they specialise in particular treatments, how many patients do they see a day, are they computerised or do they still paper chart? My god, i have been doing this job for to long and cant actually think of any questions other than those i mentioned!
They might ask you why you think you'd be right for the job and why you've applied for the position, this is the point you really sell yourself to them without going over the top.
Be honest and tell them you have never worked in this field before now, but your a hard worker whose willing to learn, you can work as part of a team, you have great communication skills and get along with everybody, from the very young to the elderly, your not frightened of hard work and dont mind having to multi task when need's be.
If you do get the job- and i really hope you do, you'll need to get yourself on a course for the National Exam for D/N'S as you will need to be registered with the GDC in July 2008, it may be worht bringing this up as it will show you have done some kind of background research.
Hope all goes well for you 2moro, go in and really let them see that you'd be perfect for the job and they'd be mad to pass you by!

Mabel Said:

I want to start a new career in dental nursing?

We Answered:

If you are in England then you should enrol with the GDC and then try and apply for a job as some dental practices will take you on if they know you are on a course. However you would have to try and fit the two around each other.
